My printer wont switch off and when i try to print i get a message telling me that the firmware is being up dated and to turn the printer off and on again which i can't do. I have unpluged it and pluged it in again but no joy.
Is this the end of the line for my printer and if so how can i get the ink out as i have just replaced them.I don't think the ink cartridges are to blame as I have printed with them before the fault occured.
If you unplug a printer that is performing a firmware update then that ruins the logic board. However you do not say why the update was being performed. had you initiated the update? or did the machine start to do this of its own accord? Anyway its too late now. A new logic board is required and it has to be done by a Canon engineer as his has the software to reload its programming. This is well out of the scope of a user repair. Sorry.

SOURCE: Reset ink level on CANON MP 140 PIXMA PRINTER
How to reset the Canon MP150 after a refill (Step 10 concerns refill; instructions below the steps):
Method1 (Safe Factory Method):
1) Disconnect the printer’s power outlet
2) Press and hold the power button while connecting the power outlet back.
3) While still holding down the power button, press the reset button twice.(red circle with a triangle)
4) Release the power button
The printer takes about 10 seconds to show the number 0.
5) Press + to change the value from 0 to 1.
6) When this value is 1, press colour button; this will light up two leds.
One is for plain paper and the other for photo paper. At this point is feed the printer with paper.
7) Press the power button twice and the printer will print a some stuff (if it doesn't print by itself, then press the "color" button once and the test sheet will print). Don’t worry much about the printed material. I got some stripped lines and some numbers. I believe that my colour cartridge is clogged which is why I got the green strips.
When you print this sheet the value in the display returns to zero.
8 ) Open the printer cover cover (not the scanner cover) and remove the cartridges. With the printer still open, disconnect the power outlet.
9) Close the lid and turn on the printer.
10) Refill cartridges and place them back in their nice little abode in the printer.

SOURCE: refilled ink cartridges on pixma mp490 ...will not print
I know this is frustrating. I am all for recycling and using refilled ink and laser toner cartridges. However, the manufacturers make most of their money from ink and toner sales. So, from time to time, they will encode or datecode cartridge chips. The only times I've been ale to get around this is by using at least one genuine OEM cartridge to trick the printer. If that does not work, try another et of refills, or you will have to use only OEMs.

My printer will not turn off and the cartridges will not cycle. The computer reconizes new hardware. Please let me know what the fix is.
