Squeaking/grinding/rattle noise during wash and spin

Kenmore 82791820, Heavy Duty 90 series.

Machine has just started making a squeaking/grinding/rattle noise during the agitation and spin cycle. Maybe a broken or loose bracket? Bad tranny? Bad coupler ?

Any suggestion as to how to best diagnose and or repair?

Would that keep the drum from turning if the machine is off? In other words, should the drum be able to "free-wheel" at all times? I've just checked and at the moment, I am unable to manually turn the agitator.

    Thanks for the info

I have pretty much the same problem. My washer is a Maytag Neptune MAH5500BWW washer and during the tumble cycle it has a rattle, grinding, squeak right before it changes direction. I have the service manual for this washer and it apparently does not have a clutch. Any advice would be appreciated.

That sounds like a clutch problem - probably just worn and need replacement. Will definitely need to pull to find exact fault.

Kenmore Heavy Duty Series 70 washing machine will not spin during draining, but makes a lot of noise like gears grinding. What's the cause and can it be repaired at a reasonable cost?

It could be the clutch or the gearbox. It can be repaired, but top loaders are old dinosaurs these days. Front loaders are as big or bigger, and more efficient and cost a fraction of the cost to run in water and electricity for heating that water.

Series 70 is just that, a series. A model number will give you the cost of spares and how many have been discontinued?

Series 90 with loud buzzing/grinding noise, won't spin

It could have gone out of balance. See if the drum looks off center and center it if necessary. Turn it off and back on to reset the switch. If that doesn't work, try pressing on the lid either 2/3 of the way back on the right or all the way back on the left (depends on the model -- try both) and see if it starts. If it does, I would suspect the lid switch.

Squeaking washing Machine during spin cycle

Hi
Loks that your machine is pretty old and hence the belt has hardened making a squeaking noise.
Good fix is get a new drive belt.
OR
Quick fix is you could put some oil on the drive belt..... it will work for now but not a permenant solution.

Kenmore 90 series with speed selector switch set to heavy duty cycle it works fine any other setting , regular , hand wash setting the agitator makes a loud clicking sound as it agitates

sounds like a transmition problem. does the noise happen when it goes into spin on the other settings? If no noise in the spin cycle on the other setting, then it sounds like a the gears in the transmition internally when bad for the agitation.

Kenmore series 80 washer only works right on hevy duty load

CHECK SEE IF MOTOR IS SEIZED BY TIPPING MACHINE FORWARD AND SEE IF YOU CAN TURN THE MOTOR BY HAND. IF MOTOR TURNS FREELY , YOU HAVE A START CAPACITOR PROBLEM.

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
