I turn on the computer and the icons show, then they go black. I turn on the monitor and briefly it shows them again. Is it in a sleep mode, did I hit a button? It was working perfectly before that. I tried a new cable from the monitor to the tower but didn't affect it so returned it. Any suggestions????
I'll assume this is an LCD panel screen.
If what you are saying is the screen shows up and then goes dim or starts dim, and you can see a dark image of the system starting up and then displaying Windows...
Your problem is a bad CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) at the top of the LCD panel.
If the screen is totally blank, then it may be the power inverter.
You can find many websites that sell these parts, but make sure you have the right model.
If you feel comfortable with working on computers, you can replace this part yourself. Otherwise, you may want to pay a technician to do it. Make sure to get a fixed price quote before authorizing the work
Here is a website on LCD repair for laptops, but it the same principal for display monitors.
