I have an MTD yard machines rear tine tiller, model 410 that was coming out of gear when the tines were engaged. When searching for an answer to the problem I discovered a solution that was posted for the exact same problem. To say the least I was overjoyed, since the solution included information that I would never have figured out simply by trial and error. A little over a year or so ago, one of the online experts who goes by ehertig_cwc posted a pic of a bent shift fork, and explained that not only replacing the fork with a newer, redesigned type, but also replacing the detent ball and spring, was the solution to the problem. I was overjoyed, until after re assembling, and testing the machine, it only worked for a minute before popping out of gear just as before. By the way, I had to pay nearly 90 dollars just for the shift fork, and the ball and spring. (ouch). Can you tell me what might still be the problem with the transmission?

I.m afraid that the cable adjustment is just fine, I needed to back it off quite a bit after replacing the badly worn belt, but it engaged, and dis-engaged just fine. As far as I can see, the only thing that could be wrong, is some kind of problem with the shaft that has the detents. It would be wonderful if someone with more knowledge than me would be able to confirm that.

SOURCE: I have a MTD yard machine rear tine tiller. Goes

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

SOURCE: Have a MTD Yard Machine rear tine tiller Model 410

It is the shift fork in the transmission. Bad part design and if you plan to take it apart, use sandpaper and really clean the wheel axle and tine axle before you take it apart.

MTD series 410 rear tine tiller drive wheels slip

I have the same issue with one I am working on. It appears the keys in the drive shaft are not rotating far enough out on the drive gear side to fully engage in the gear. I have studied and studied this and so far I have been unable to determine why. If I find out I will let you know. I am also trying to figure out what is supposed to pull these keys out of the till engagement gear.

MTD yard machine model#216-410-000

either your tine shaft is seized to bushings which requires total dissassembly of unit or you have a failure of drive chain or gear i'm currently repairing one with the seized bushings if you are not a technician i would recomend replaceing unit very costly to repair in any case.

Broken clutch cable connector, MTD Tiller

I found micro fiche on jackssmallengines.com . Click on the manufacturer's tab at the top of the page then you'll have the option to use an off-site tool to locate your machine. I used it and found my 1990 mtd rear tine tiller. I needed the cable that engages the tines - maybe the same as you. The part number for my 1990 model's cable was 746-0535. Dont know if it was still the same in 96 to 98. But look at the fiche and see.

Yard Machines/Tiller

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft
