We purchased a new home last year, and it came w/ GE's Monogram series of stainless steel appliances. One of them, the built-in gas range top, no longer lights up. Normally, when you turn the dial, you hear clicking, the dial has a red indicator light that turns on as well (safety feature to show the gas is turned on), and then the fire starts. However, when the range stopped lighting, the clicking was gone, the red indicator light on the dial doesn't turn on, but the gas still flows because you can smell it. I checked the outlet that the range is plugged into, and it has power running to it. Can this be a do-it-yourself fix, or do I need to call for professional service? Thanks.
There is a transformer in it that bumps the 120vac house voltage to 230 volts. I'm 98% positive the transformer is bad and it was more than likely caused by a power company surge. I suggest calling for service since it is Monogram. It is more complex to work on. That said, I would ONLY trust GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or schedule online at www.geappliances.com to have it fixed.
