I have a Kenmore gas dryer Model #73932. When I push the start button, It starts but stops as soon as I let go of it. I opened up the control panel, and see nothing obviously wrong. I understand this may be as simple as replacing the start button, but don't know how to troubleshoot it. I need a detailed answer I have some electrical testing tools, but don't know how to use them. If the solution is too difficult or expensive, I will simply replace the dryer, but I hate to do that. Last year I replaced the heater components myself, but don't know how to tell what is wrong electronically. Please help! Thank you.

I just checked and if I hold the switch in, the dryer runs but does not heat.

Could you please explain your answer in more detail. Why would the door switch cause this problem and how can I check to see if it is? Someone else was talking about the motor being bad and in reading old answers to the same question, I found all kinds of things people said were the problem. I am hoping that your answer is the correct one. It sounds simple and inexpensive.

    Thanks for your help.

It's not the start button. You need to replace the door switch.

SOURCE: GE dryer starts but..... stops

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.
Thanks/Mike

SOURCE: Kenmore Dryer won't stay running

if the thermal fuse is bad the dryer won't run at all, or it will have stopped heating completely. more likely this is a unit with a power control board in the console. these were very known for the resistor on the board burning out which can be checked visually. i've had at least 6 or 7 of these do that exact same thing. hope this helps.

SOURCE: Kenmore Elite gas dryer

Hello.
vegetarianGA
You said,

When I purchased my house 2 years ago, the sellers left the washer and dryer for me. They informed me of a problem with the dryer's start button not wanting to stay pressed in. They said their solutions was to use something to keep it pressed in and so I started using shipping tape for this purpose. Last night it finally stopped working - something behind the button is obviously broken (the switch). While looking for a replacement switch and an on-line service manual, I came across this site. I did order the part from Sears today and will attempt to repair the problem myself. If I cannot, I will buy a new dryer before I pay a tech $60+ to repair a 6 year-old dryer.
I did not have the model number when I called Sears but did have another number off the back of the dryer which was for the "panel control" and the number is 3979018. The sales rep did some cross-referencing and said I own model #11072932100. I was wondering if you can direct me to an on-line service manual so I will know how to replace the switch when it arrives.

Here our sponsor's site to fine what you asked me for, a service manual!

SOURCE: How to replace door switch on old kenmore stac.dryer 110.88752792

Door switch If the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch.Check online for the part repairclinic.com has it for $14.00 not bad

Dryer won't stay on when let go of start button.

One of two things is wrong. Either the start switch has gone bad or the start winding in the motor is failing to switch over to the run winding. You'll need to get a multimeter and before starting unplug the dryer. Once thats done, get behind it, remove the back cover to the control panal and disconnect the two wires that are connected to the start button. With your meter set for checking continuity, place a meter lead on start button pins where the wires were connected, one lead on each side. With leads in place have someone press the start button, if continuity shows when pressed and stops when its not, the button is good and the motor is bad. Personally, I think the motor winding has burnt, and the motor should be replace, but I also think that the start button should be changed as well because its in direct series with the motor, and could have taken damage that may not show up until further down the road, plus its an inexpensive part.

Dryer will start when start button is pushed, but as soon as you stop pressing the button, the dryer stops

I would open up the control panel unplug the unit, disconnect the wires to the push-to-start-switch and use a paperclip to attach these two connecters. If everything works you know it is the switch that is bad.

Gas dryer starts blowing cold air after 5 minutes

This sounds like the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up. Here is a link that should help http://appliancehelponline.com/gdryertroublevideo.html

Kenmore gas dryer timer? problem

Sounds like your centrifugal switch on your drive motor may be defective. The switch is supposed to "latch" (or stay closed) when the drive motor begins to spin. That...or, you may have a defective start switch. Please post back with your COMPLETE model number so I can determine how your dryer is configured as all dryers are not alike. I need to make sure.

Kenmore Dryer won't stay running

You need a new thermal fuse. The fuse is located on the blower wheel cover. This fuse cannot be re-set. Replace if open (there is no continuity between terminals). Part number is AP3132867. It is a Whirlpool part but it is the one that fits most if not all Kenmore/Whirlpool dryers.
