Replace belt in maytag pav2300aww

How hard is it to replace the belt in this washer? Last weekend it was making a grinding/squealing noise, the agitator slowed wat down, then it stopped and I smelled a hot rubber smell. I'm assuming its the belt, but want to know how to get to it. Also, since the washer was in mid-cycle it still has standing water (it happened right before the spin cycle). Any ideas on getting the water out...short of a bucket? I'm trying to save some money if possible and I'm fairly mechanically inclined. Thanks

Ok, so I found the belt and its NOT broken. I tested the washer further and found that when I start the machine in the spin cycle, it wont move. THe basket it not moving and it sounds like the motor is trying to work (a hummmm).

SOURCE: Grinding sound during agitation cycle on my Maytag Performa

Its probably you stator plate and rotor. But you need special tools for this repair. There a spring that is under 200 pounds of pressure and if you take the screws off that hold the plate its going to fly into you face if your dont use the special tools to depress the spring. Is it more of a clanking kinda of noise? DOes it olnly happen with heavy loads? Try this out. Fill the washer with water only. and get it into a wash cycle with water only. If there is no noise then put in like a load of towels. A heavy load. Now if you hear the noise now then its for sure you stator plate and rotor..hope this helps, but like i said you need those special tools to do this repair or injury can result from the spring part.

SOURCE: Maytag washer sounds like a jackhammer when

There is only one belt on the machine (the burning rubber smell, probably). Sounds like something is wrong with the clutch /drive mechanism. Unless your an accomplished DIY'er, it sounds like a job for the Maytag Man.
Sorry.........................

SOURCE: maytag PAV2300AWW Washer makes grinding sound when agitating

Sounds like it is the bearing on the water pump. Take off back plate and replace and remove 3 screws and two hoses (the one hose is a waste line so make sure you have a bucket to empty our waste water) after removing these remove belt on bottom of pump.

If it was the bearing it should be leaking water out the bottom! It is more than likely the water pump. The seal in the pump drops down and then makes noise. The pump should be in rear. tilt machine back remove belt then try turning the pump by hand if tight replace.

Maytag Performa, Noisey spin cycle, now does not work

the belt may be old and stretched/slipping...if it is stretched and slipping it will cause the squealing .............otherwise, check the pulley for the belt/motor to see if it is okay and the motor itself copuld be worn out if the belt looks ok............be careful, you can get zapped if you touch a wire and also if the motor is burned up it can cause a fire so watch carefully and you should be able to see which of these possibilities are the problem..............

My maytag washer makes a horrible noise in the wash and rinse cycle but not in spin

Sounds like it could be a loose or stretched belt if sharp squeal hard to tell without noise description.

Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps
