This is a common problem with front loader washers. Yes, it is possible to replace, but before doing so have you attempted to clean it with bleach and a non abrasive scrub pad (that would be the green kitchen pads - NO SOS pads or steel wool!)? The following link will give you some guidance on preventive measures to take in minimizing and/or preventing front loader mildew and odor:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r513372-front_loader_mildew_odor

If you still wish to replace the door seal (called a "bellow"), the following link describes how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385210-replacing_door_bellow_kenmore_elite

Some of the steps (like the diagnostics procedures) may differ with your washer. The 417 model that you have is the smaller front loader. In addition, your door bellow may be held in place around the door by adhesive, instead of a clamp. You will need to remove the bellow from around the door using a putty knife to carefully peel is loose. Clean the area thoroughly before installing the new bellow. The back of the bellow on yours may be held in place by a large spring clamp. This will require two people to get it back in place.

You can find a replacement at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in you model number and look under the "Tun/Motor" heading for item number 8 (part #5303937187). These parts usually come with instructions. I hope this helps you.

Frigidaire FTF530FS Front Load Washer - I am trying to clean the accordian hose at the bottom of the machine to see if this is the cause of a bad odor in machine (which also transfers to clothes). There...

it is spring clamp and to remove it use a pair of pliers with the jaws of the pliers placed on the outside of the ends of the clamp and squeezed into the center, but before doing that look around the lower part of the door seal with the door open, water is retained in that area and will become stagnant/moldy,the seal can be gently pulled some and you will see

I want to buy a Frigidaire Affinity washer because I found one at a good price, BUT several reviews say there is a moldy smell that is awful. Any advice?!

Leave the door open to allow the tub area to dry after use (both top and front loaders). Front loaders also have a propensity to hold a small amount of water in the rubber door seal. Wiping this up after each use will also help prevent the growth of mould.

Moldy mildew smell

The following link can give you some advice on common causes of front loader washer odors and some preventive measures you can take to keep them from coming back:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608512-getting_rid_front_loader_mildew_odor

The most common causes of persistent odors comes from not leaving the door OPEN between washes. The manufacturer recommends this to allow the wash tub to air out and to prevent mold and mildew from forming.

NOTE: Residual water in the drain lines and pump reservoir is NORMAL. Leaving the door open will NOT make this water evaporate, but will allow constant air flow to prevent it from becoming stagnant.

A common secondary cause comes from debris becoming trapped in the rubber door bellow and/or drain pump. It is recommended that you pull back the rubber folds in the door bellow (gray rubber seal) and check for dirt, debris or small articles of clothing that may have become trapped there. Socks are a common thing that become trapped, and if left for a long period of time, become stagnant. The drain pump reservoir is another common place for things to collect and become stagnant.

If you need to check the drain pump, the following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574284-checking_the_drain_pump_on_a_front_loade

All these are preventive measures that can drastically prevent odors, mold and mildew. Read through the advice given and post back and let me kow if you require additional assistance. I hope you find this information helpful.

Smelly clothes

Maytag had a big problem with the rubber boot in the front of the washer. They redesigned it to drain better so water would not remain in the bottom and get moldy smelling.Open the door and look down in the boot with a flashlight.Make sure if there are drain holes in the bottom that they are clear and not clogged with soape or lint.Put a couple of old towels in the machine and a little soap and twice as much clorine bleach as normal and run a cycle. It should help.It is also good to leave the door opened between washes if possible.

Smells moldy and very loud during spin cycle

The moldy smell is a typical problem from these front load machines. This happens due to the design of front load machines themselves, and the rubber "boot" or gasket at the front that seals the machine when the door closes. Since these machines use less water, they do not flush out the dirt and gunk as well as typical top load machines. Plus, the gasket at the front that seals the washer door holds water even after the cycle is over. This water tends to linger and start to mold and stink. Remedies are few. After washing, leaving the door cracked and/or opened will help keep air flow and dry out the tub quicker. This helps with preventing the stagnant air. Unfortunately, you are experiencing the smell.

There is a product called Affresh. This is like an Alka seltzer tablet for the washer. The directions are included on the packet. As far as I know there are 3 tablets to a pack. Essentially, you run your washer on the hottest cycle possible (or a clean cycle if your washer has that) and toss in the tablets. Preventive maintenance can be performed by cleaning your washer monthly (or as needed) with a tablet at a time. When you have the smell and need to get rid of it, it requires more of a kick. In that scenario you would use all 3 tablets. These tablets will kill the lingering bacteria in the washer and hopefully all the smell. You may have to rinse and repeat this method.

On to the loud noise. Noises are hard to know unless actually heard. But I have a good idea what you are experiencing. If it is a very loud ROAR, kind of like a plane, that is a tub bearing in the back of the machine. This is a VERY costly repair, both for labor expenses and parts. The parts will run you between $200 and $400. Once a repair man can get in and see which parts have failed, then you will know. Also, it depends on what that particular repair man will charge. As unfortunate as it may seem, I would not recommend fixing it. This will save you money from the repair man spending 1-2 hours ripping it apart to tell you the final bill will exceed $500 or $600 dollars.

If this is not the sound, describe it and I can offer more assistance :)

Smells like old smelly socks

this might be coming from the rubber door seal clean it all the way round make sure holes at bottom are not blocked and the rubber door seal is all clean. also clean the draw so there is no power left in there and it is all clean. also a good thing to do is run it though a cleaning cycle with normal detergent at max temperature that the machine can do. hope this helps.

I have always had a smell coming from my duet washer. I put bleach in and run it through a rinse cycle, but it always comes back

there may be some dirt or other things collecting in the drain boot attatch to the drain pump there is usually a plastic coin trap located inside the rubber boot his will cause a musty smell in the washer.as well as a moldy door boot seal.if the door boot is moldy it needs to be replaced.
