Probably excessive ice in the condensor. Likely defrost thermostat or defrost heater problem.

What happens is excessive ice keeps airflow from the refrigerator part of the unit.

Sounds like a defrost problem. First though, check your settings that they are in the correct spots where the owner's manual tells you they should be. IF that is not the issue, next, can you look in the area of the back wall of the fridge to see if the condensor coils are all iced over? You may need to remove the rear inside panel to see them. No hard, couple of screws and your there. This is most commonly caused from little people or our beloved spouse (never us!) leaving the fridge door open a smidge overnight or through the day. Another common problem is after the holidays when someone other than yourself tries to stuff the 50 pound turkey in a 20 spot leaving no room for the door to shut. As a result, the chilling function will go into hyperdrive to keep cooling and eventually ice over and become very inefficient at cooling in the fridge. Even the freezer is effected, but it is not as easy to notice. Here's what to do. Once you find the large area along the back wall of the fridge that contains the frozen over coils, you will want to unplug the fridge and get that ice out of there completely. Using hot water and a catch basin to catch the water you pour over the coils, continue this until the ice is all gone. Make sure your settings are back to normal settings as per owner's manual and plug in. Should be all better now.

HI look for this part in the freezer. its the most common one to fail.replace it

It is due to the defrost timer is not working. Once it is replaced, you should be good for another year. The information is given by the repairman. I have this replaced two days ago. The MayTag part number is: 61005988.

the ice maker wont cycle untill the temp of the ice is around 10 degrees so if the freezer is at 15 or 20 due to some other malfunction then you will see the maker full of ice but it wont harvest and make another batch. so you could have a sensor bad, control malfunction, refrigeration issue, compressor, defrost system malfunction(you mentioned ice build up)

check you paperwork , and manual. sounds like a compressor issue, which "should" be covered by 5 year manufacture warr. reason i say "should" is hte warr's all changed jan1/06. only one year form there . but check your manual itll have the warr info in it
