SOURCE: Hi, i have a dell
Two common problems can cause this sort of thing and is a place to start in trying to resolve the issue.
The first one is overheating. When the cpu gets too hot it will start running sluggishly and can completely freeze up. Put your hand behind the back where the power supply is and feel how hot the air coming out is. If there is no air movement you're also in trouble. The air normally will feel warm but not hot. Also feel the case itself. Dust clogs up the fans, both power supply and extra fans and the cpu fan itself. Make sure any fan you can see isn't covered with lint. Unless you are sure what you are doing don't try to clean it yourself. You don't want to cause static. Have it cleaned. The cpu fan is most important but all of them need to be cleaned out periodically, in homes with pets more often. You can try using a q-tip and clean off the fan blades as much as you can.
The second common cause is spyware. You can acquire spyware from websites. It is not unusual to have a number of them, all trying running at the same time. You can get so many that they can slow down your machine. A good (and free) program like Spybot Search and Destroy and remove these. But BEWARE, not all programs that claim to get rid of spyware do so! Some actually do the opposite. Spybot and Adaware (NOT adware! adAware by lava soft is the one) are free and good programs to get rid of spyware.
There are other things that can also cause your problem but these two are very common and a good place to start.
