    3 things to try.

  • ron dijcks Jul 10, 2014

    1. remove the battery, and replace after a minute.

Sorry, the "enter" button adds a comment instead of going to next-line.

IF you can see the menu, try to change the screen brightness. I seems that you can see photographs so hopefully there is enough brightness for you to make this adjustment. As well, you could try resetting the entire camera. This function is also in the menu, settings.

SOURCE: Problem with my camera

Go here and search knowledge base for E18: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=224&modelid=10599 Issue: Lens will not move and camera may display an E18 or "Lens" error. Solution: Possible solutions for an E18 or Lens Error message PowerShot SD300 The "E18" or "Lens" error message indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover. This error may appear where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting such as, for example, when pressure is applied to the lens or the area surrounding the lens while handling the camera. The error may also be displayed if the lens unit/camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera. Solution Check the following when you operate the camera to avoid applying pressure to the lens and surrounding area: * Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting. * Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case. If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred.

SOURCE: canon powershot SD 100 - I can't see anything but a black screen

This problem is caused by a stuck shutter assembly. Normally the shutter is open which allows light to enter the image sensor and show you the live preview you see on the screen. When you take a picture the shutter closes which allows the image sensor to record what was seen at the exact moment the shutter closed. The shutter is stuck closed, causing the image sensor to always be in the dark. These shutter assemblies are extremely small and delicate. The miniature parts can become jammed with just the slightest bit of oil or contaminant, or the slightest misalignment of components. The problem can sometimes be fixed by gentle tapping of the camera on a solid surface. If you are going to try this be VERY careful, and do not tap the camera on the buttons, lens, or battery door. If this does not solve your problem then the camera is going to have to be taken apart and the shutter cleaned and reset to allow free movement. This repair costs $125 to $145.

SOURCE: LCD screen black with white specs in picture and movie mode

With the power off, hold the camera in your palm and smack the front of the camera on your leg or arm. You might have to smack it a few time to get it to work. It has to do with the camera CDD lense (shuttle) being stuck. By smacking it around, it will free up the lense. Being extra gentle with it though. It worked for me. Hope this help.

SOURCE: Black LCD screen/ not 'seeing' picture. Canon EOS 400D camera

Hi

The Digital Rebel XTi doesn't have 'live view' mode, you can't see what you're taking a picture of before you take the picture.

My pictures are black i cant see anything when i try to take a picture

Your pictures will usually come out black if you're taking those against the light. Check the lighting or your flash (esp. when it's dark - flash is needed). You should know if your camera is for indoor or outdoor use.

Piece of junk that took great pictures for 1 year and now shows a black screen. Do not buy any Canon products. We also have one of these pieces of junk at work, now displays a E 18 code. Appears Canon wants to make mucho dollars by producing ****.

As for the totally dark screen, either your LCD or driver board is bad. You will need to open and replace the broken part.

Repair of digital camera

If you see all black in the viewfinder something bad has happened to the lens. It could be stuck, tilted, etc.

It will need to be taken apart and serviced by a trained technician.

Black LCD Screen

Faulty main or secondary board. Could also be faulty light sensor or iris. Not a user fixable problem unless you can get another f601 with a broken lens etc with good boards (to replace boards). Or a dead camera with good lens assembly (contains iris).
Very fiddly if you have the parts!!!!!!

Best advise is to sell it as faulty on ebay.
