Can you suggest which OS you are using?
Does this problem exist for all the CDs/DVDs?
Try to insert bootable CD and try boot from it and check if it works.
You can try blank cd and just write it using NERO and check.
You need to install the support programs for your laptop motherboard. These are also called your "laptop driver software" which is usually shipped or packaged with your laptop. In this CD or DVD Installer, all hardware devices must be well supported by their compatible software drivers.
Now look for the CD/DVD Installer and install the drivers.
I do have the same problem, my laptop doesnt detects the DVD writer, checked with the acer support, asked me to check the motherboard and may need to change that.
Presuming that you've already tried add new hardware in control panel
remove the drive from the machine. normally there are a couple of screws in the base of the laptop. boot the machine and do a normal shutdown. reinsert the cd drive and reboot.
Since I can't determine what specific type of DVD Drive you have based on laptop model, here is a website that will give you a few choices of generic drive drivers that should solve your problem. Download the drivers, install and reboot before you let windows install the device. Let the install happen after reboot.
