Lift the scanner cover so that you can see the platen glass. Look to the left of the large sheet of glass and you will see a narrow strip of glass. This is the area used to scan documents fed from the ADF. Make sure that this glass is very clean. Use a damp cloth to clean any dirt or buildup.
For horizontal lines, try using the HP "toolbox" to clean the print heads. You may need to repeat this process until you achieve a satisfactory result.
The scanner bulbs ahve gone bad.U need to get it them replaced. Before that try resetting the printer using the # and the number 6 buttons, holding them down and then inserting the power cord at the back of the printer. see if it works.

You may see what is blocking the light source or possibly a defect in it.

If your copies and printouts are coming out fine, then only the scanner can be at fault.
you probably have something on the scanning bulb when it goes through the feeder. The scanning bulb is directly to the left of where you use the flatbed. Clean that glass with a dry, clean cloth and you should be back in business.
Well I hate to give out bad news but if that line is in the exact same location on every scan it means that the element (the scanning light) has failed. Sorry that I could not earn a FixYa for you. If you need to replace the scanner I have had excellent luck with Epson scanners.
