GE 24in GSD980X Dishwasher water leak in pump &motor area
Water leaks out where the motor shaft enters the pump assembly. It leaks slow when pump is running wash cycle, but leaks fast when draining. I can fix and diagnose household and car electrical. Is it a practical fix to replace what must be a shaft seal in the pump? The dishwasher is a 1995 model.

I had the same problem. There is no way of replacing seal/joint between pump and motor. It can't be taken apart w/o destroying parts, it only comes as an assembly. Costs around 130$ for pump/motor assy, so it might not be worth it.

Check the drainage hose to see if its connected properly. it is located under the unit. it may be loose or, not connected correctly. if the drainage hose is connected properly, this will be a faulty water valve. replace if found to be faulty.

Lower rack
Spray arm
Spray arm support
Wash/drain impellers
Then pry the seal out of its housing and replace it.

I currently had the same problem with mine and the culprit was the boot that screws on to the spray arm which serves as the seal from the spray arm to the motor.To find out spin the base of the spray arm loose and take off the screw tightened clamp that holds the boot to the motor. Mine had dry rotted and leaked very badly.The part as only about $10. Hope this helps
