After i have taken a photo i am unable to view it as the LCD screen shows a blue square 'running' around itself (like the Mac beach ball!). Sometimes it doesn't do that but says Read Error, instead.
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then removethe memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader.Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of yourworking computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device oran external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card andcopy the photos to your computer.Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. Youcan copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off yourmemory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing anyprograms.
Testimonial: "Thanks Chris, that is an idea. I actually restored the factory settings on it, thanks to another suggestion from a friend, and everything seems to be back to normal. Thanks again."

the d40 does not have live view. you would need to get a different camera.
SOURCE: d70s lcd screen is black
The D70S is a SLR (single lens reflex). You cannot use the LCD for taking pictures like the small compact digital cameras. There is no way for the CCD sensor to have any image prior to taking since it is behind the mirror and the shutter is closed.

Had the same problem with my SD10. The switch in the AV port sometimes gets dirty or corroded, and tricks the camera into thinking that an AV plug is inserted. This will turn off the screen.
To fix it, repeatedly insert and remove an AV cable into the port several times. This may help break off any corrosion or dirt that may be holding this switch open.

Sounds like the card is failing - try recovering the images with a free software package - Google will find you lots - then Format or discard the card. Format in the camera - NEVER format using a computer
