When I crank over the motor, gas gushes out of a hole in the top of the carb (right next to the choke mouth) where the air cleaner mounts. Motor runs great, but gas will start pouring all over after a couple of seconds after startup. Briggs motor on an Elite mower.
Usually caused by the needle valve in the fuel bowl not seating correctly. Float might be sticking or not shutting off when full due to a sticking needle valve. Caused by contaminated fuel (gras or other debris can get in while adding fuel). Hope this helps.
Testimonial: "Thanks, Terry. I took the carb apart to inspect. To my untrained eye, everything looked ok. Cleaned it up a bit. Put it back together and now no fuel spills out -- but it doesn't start now, either. It acts as if it is getting no fuel. The bowl is full, but it won't fire. I wonder what I could have done to cause this? It's got a new fuel pump, so I guess that leaves a clogged port somewhere?"
Check the spark plug for spark. Remove the plug from the engine, put the wire back on and ground it to the engine. Pull the start cord and watch for spark. If none, replace it. Check the idle adjustment screw. Turn clockwise till it closes, note the number of turns. Turn counterclockwise about 1 turn and try to start it, then 1 1/2 turns. If it doesn't start, then return it to the original setting. I will try to pour a little gas down the carb opening and try to start it, WD40 will also work if you squirt it while its rotating.

You are on the right track with the electronic solenoid for the needle valve. You can unplug it and unscrew the solenoid to examine it closely. Sometimes a very small piece of trash or grain of sand will get in with the delicate spring on the needle valve and it will become stuck. You can shake it and gently tap it and sometimes dislodge the trash or debris and it will then work again.
I have had the experience over the past 50-years with these lawn mowers and generally, about every two or three years I have to replace the solenoid needle valve because it becomes so heavily clogged up with fine granules and dirt. It's a common problem and most small engine repair shops carry this part and the part is pretty much universal regardless of the machine it goes on. Also, Walmart stores carry this solenoid as a replacement part.
You can usually but this solenoid for $12.00 to $18.00 depending on where you buy it.
