Green Convergence problem

After just over 4 years of good service, the green color on my Toshiba 50H82 is off and appears to be displaying on an angle. When I try the Touchfocus, I just get Touchfocus error once it goes through the Touchfocus process. During the Touchfocus, the Red and Blue lines look good, the green vertical line looks good except on the right hand side where in angles in at the bottom of the screen. The green horizontal line has a wave in it. The line starts out OK at the bottom right, but then creates a wave near the middle of the screen and then angles back down at the bottom left. Any words displayed in the middle of the screen have the green color displayed about 1/2 inch above the other colors. Also images on the screen look like an image from an old 3D movie. I tried the manual convergence adjustment, but only the Red and Blue can be adjusted. If anyone can help with advice on what the issue is and an estimate on repair cost, that would be helpful. Also any advice on if it is worth having this fixed, I like the TV and anyone visiting always commented on the great picture it had, but I have been looking to upgrade to a 1080P set. This may be incentive to make the switch. As a side comment the extended warenty ran out 80 days ago, isn't that always the case? Thanks in advance for any advice.

O.K. This is a CRT Projection TV see http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/televisions/product.asp?model=50H82 The Manual is available from http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/models/50H82/docs/50H82_om_e.pdf , and this describes the Manual Convergence process, I doubt this will help, but it's step #1. The problem you are describing sound to me like a deflection problem. The electron beam in the green projection 'tube' (a super bright CRT) is probably not being controlled correctly. This can be caused by several things, from least likely to most :) I do not recommend that someone untrained in electronics attempt to service a CRT based television due to the potential for extreme shock or electrocution. That caveat said, here are the possibilities. #1 Physical Trauma: The TV has been shifted moved or bumped hard, and one or more of the fixed permanent magnets used to help convergence has come loose, or the CRT projection tube was damaged. I don't think these TVs use convergence magnets anymore, but it's possible. The green CRT tube failing would be more likely if all four corners were affected, but I've seen a failing CRT affect a single corner/edge before. I believe that this model has projection tubes that are separate from the colored filters, so swapping the tubes around may be possible. I do not have a service manual for this set, and this may be a hazardous operation due to high voltages. #2 Stray magnetic field: Someone dropped a magnet into the TV, and it landed close enough to the green tube to effect it only, or perhaps some other piece of equipment is effecting JUST the Green CRT (clock radio, speaker, badly designed wall wart, etc.). Removing the offending magnetic field may cure the problem. Perhaps the offending magnetic field has been removed, but it's presence is still felt. Try using the degauss function built into the TV set (I can't find one in the manual, but it may be present). You may want to try using a degaussing coil, and see if that helps the problem. Just be careful not to get the coil too close to the base of the projector tubes. #3 Deflection drive electronics: A CRT works by using an electron beam to excite fluorescent compounds on the face of the CRT. To move the electron beam about, a process called deflection is employed. Magnetic coils (the choke) are used to steer the electron beam up, down, left or right. These coils are driven by transistors, and as one fails, you will get an image that starts collapsing in the affected section. On a standard CRT TV, that would mean the entire image is affected, but a CRT projection display uses separate red, green, and blue CRT projection tubes to build the image, so you have three times the deflection, three times the possible transistor failures, and in your case, the odd result of just the green part of the image displaying incorrectly. This problem will probably require a service call, and a electronic board swap, but the problem could be the choke (the magnetic coils) on the green CRT projection tube. Swapping the green tube for another tube could prove if it's the tube or if the deflection electronics that are going out. Again, my feeling is that this is a deflection issue requiring a board swap (I doubt anyone actually does component level repair anymore) Sorry, I don't have a better answer, peace. Paul.

How to align,calibrate

I can tell you how to enter the service menu for Convergence:

Mute,

Mute and hold and while holding then press Menu on front of set

A "S" should appear in upper right corner of screen (means Service mode is engaged).

Press menu again for convergence mode

Press 7 and grid of lines will appear

3 will rotate which color can be adjusted (DO NOT ADJUST GREEN!)

You navigate with 4 to go left, 6 to go right, 2 to go up, and 8 to go down.

5 will stop blinking cursor on screen

With cursor not blinking the same 4,6,2, and 8 will adjust at the point on the screen where the cursor is

5 will make cursor blink again so you can navigate

PRESS 7 to save adjustments and exit.


This set can be a little difficult to get into the "S" menu---you have to do it just right.

Tv have a problems known as a convergence problems,it dead.The tv convergence board,require 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors to be replaced to solved the convergence problems.The shop will,cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

Hi I have a toshiba 50h82 tv that is 7 years old with a convergence problem with the red and green lines that is going to cost $400 to fix but now that I am thinking about it before the convergence problem...

You are describing 2 different problems. The convergence problem can be fixed by either resoldering the convergence ICs or replacing them. These ICs cost about $25 each and there are 2. I suspect that the $4oo is for replacing the convergence board. This should not be necessary as the board can be fixed. Also, the brightness problem can be dirty CRTs, dirty mirror or faulty coolant fluid on the CRTs. If the picture was good prior to the convergence problem, the set is probably worth the repair if you can get the board fixed. While the board is being repaired, the service shop should be able to tell whether or not the brightness can be adjusted.

2.12.5 Convergence point adjustment
Adjustment preparation
(1) Select color to adjust.
“STATUS” - Green
“0” - Red
“ANT” - Blue
(2) Use 4, 6, 2, and 5 to move the cursor position
(dotted lines).
(3) Use thumb stick to move the convergence point.
(4) Three adjustment modes are available:
1. (3x3) Press “STATUS” 5 times (only works
when DCU is in uncorrected state)
2. (7x5) Press “0” 5 times
3. (13x9) Press “ANT” 5 times
For touch-up, only the (13x9) mode is necessary.
This will adjust every cross-hatch intersection point
on the screen.
For complete adjustment, start with (3x3) mode. This
will adjust center point and eight edge points only,
but will greatly reduce adjustment time. Then use
(7x5) mode, and finally (13x9) mode to finish
convergence.
If “S” distortion appears between cross-hatch lines
repeat (7x5) mode to change calculation process
while adjusting to remove distortion, then return to
(13x9) mode to finish touch-up convergence.
Adjustment procedure
(1) Receive any NTSC signal.
(2) Start adjustment at the center of the screen.
(3) Continue adjustment at next closest position.
(4) Adjust center area first, ending with edge sections.
(5) Press INFO button to perform calculation operation.
This process will take about 2 seconds and no
picture will be seen at this time.
(6) After interpolation, check convergence again and
repeat (1)-(5) if necessary.
(7) When convergence is acceptable, press PIP MODE
to write data to ROM memory. ROM WRITE? is
displayed to alarm system that ROM will be
overwritten with new data. Press the PIP MODE
button again to write displayed data to ROM.
(8) DATA WRITE TO ROM will take approximately 4
seconds and no picture will be displayed.
(9) Green dots will be displayed when operation is
completed.
(10) Press MUTE to return to convergence pattern, then
confirm again convergence is acceptable.
(11) Press PIP MODE (ROM WRITE) mode, then press
PIP CH to initialize sensor data positions.
Adjustment procedure
(12) Input any 1080I signal.
(13)Press EXIT key 5 times to exit video mode.
(14) Select an input with 1080i signal.
(15)Access menu and select ASPECT 5 mode.
(16)Press the SERVICE SW. ONLY button to enter to
DCU crosshatch signal.
(17)Repeat steps 2~11 above.
Notes: (1) Display only green for easier adjustment and
match to jig screen. Press “MENU”, THEN
PRESS “STATUS”.
(2) Perform interpolation and data write to ROM
after green adjustment. Once green has been
confirmed to match jig screen, the jig screen can
be removed. Do not readjust the green color
after jig screen has been removed. This is now
your reference color.
(3) Display green and red only and match red to
green.
(4) Display all colors and match blue to green and
red. Touch-up red color if necessary.
(5) Existing DATA in ROM can be read by pressing
the SWAP button 2 times. This data can be used
after replacing a component (CRT, DY, etc.)
Where complete convergence adjustment is not
necessary, be careful not to overwrite this data.
DO NOT write cleared RAM data into ROM or a
complete convergence adjustment will be
necessary. Remember to try MAGIC FOCUS
before starting convergence adjustment to
minimize adjustment time.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

Toshiba 50H82 blue arcing?

color shadows on numbers or letters indicate a possible convergence problem.. might be a crt deflection problem.
