Was using it as normal when it began acting weird, for example:
It refuses to play or Record any tape
It refuses to close it's door with tapes
It flashes C:31:40 on the screen with beeping noise along with the arrow symbol indicating to remove the tape cassette.
Stuck sensor. Sounds silly but smack it.
Hit your camera several times with a flat hand (bottom, tape side). Its strange but it solved it for a lot of people. Firmly smack the bottom and then put the battery back on and give a it a shot.

It seems like your carriage unit needs servicing.. basically the gears that load the tape and move the tape wheels have become worn.. You can attempt to repair this your self at the risk of rendering it useless. YOu can call a service center and let them service it or you can take it in to a profession technician and let him rebuild the gear to gear ratio for you ..
If any other experts have other suggestions you can try, please by all means try them, take mine as a last resort..

The cassette mechanism has a large gear that rotates to different
positions for the different modes. On time around is a play -
stop cycle. It is stuck in one position and won't come around to
the stop spot. Need to take the cover off and help it to turn to
get the cassette out. Then figure out if something is wrong
preventing it from turning or if the wheel driving it is the
problem. They are all a little different so this is where your
mechanical apptitude comes in.
By the way, you'll figure out right away they don't intend these things to be fixed.

Several things could be happening...the tape is backwards, upside down, inverted or just wrong type since it closes without it. Next check to see on the inside if something is jamming the tape. While it closes without a tape there could be something that jams when a tape is inserted.
