Water Dispenser freezes

I have a 3 year old GE GSL25 refrigerator with the water/ice dispenser on the freezer door. Even when setting the freezer at 2 and turning the fridge's lower drawer to the warmer "cheese" setting, the water dispenser line would freeze every few weeks. If you have this problem, first verify that the water filter (back of the fridge) is not clogged and that water flows from the water line at the bottom left corner of the freezer door (disconnect and press water delivery dispenser-see owners manual).
I used the hair dryer recommendation to unfreeze the line by heating the flat area of the freezer door directly behind the water dispenser area (~10 min did it). The trick to keep if from freezing up again involved buying a cheap foam sleeping bag mattress (~1/3 inch or 1 cm thick) made of a polyurethane foam (pretty dense). I cut it to match the flat area of the freezer door behind the water dispenser and taped it to the door with packing tape. For the past 3 weeks (even with freezer at #4 setting), my water is flowing freely. Personally, I think this solves a product defect with insufficient insulation in the freezer door near the dispenser water line.

We have had the same problem on a GE Frig. since we got it 10 years ago. We finally came up with a solution that works in minutes on our model. Using a flexible wire "probe" we determined the blockage was located about 3 inches from the outlet of the water dispenser. Our idea was to inject warm water against the icy plug blocking the line. We purchased a marinade injector used for injecting meat like the one at http://www.kitchenniche.ca/marinade-injector-p-1246.html. The big problem was finding a flexible tube that would attach to the marinate injector that was small enough to slide inside the dispenser tube. We finally took an old mouse, cut the cord about 5 inches long, pulled the wires out of it, and pushed it on the end of the injector. We fill the injector with hot water from the tap, push the "tube" into the dispenser until it meets the ice dam, and then start to slowly inject the warm water. Sometimes it takes two attempts but usually it melds the ice on the first tube of warm water injected.

If you pull back the gaskets along the door and see screws you can take the million of them off and move the tubing farther away from the interior door surface along with adding some fiberglass or foam insulation to keep the cold away. Usually what happens is the heating element for that area fails and the tubes freeze up. If your door is a "foamed in place" door without any screws to separate the interior part off the doors exterior then the only thing is to change the whole door for about $320 bucks. Other than that the only way to access a foamed in place door is to actually cut into the plastic interior to reach the tubing, insulate it better, then use the expoxy repair kit to glue the piece back on. Not pretty but cheaper than a new door.

I took some picture wire and inserted it into the water dispenser and heated it up with a blow dryer. After about 6 mins, it started working with no issues.

I fixed mine by leaving the light on the dispenser on. It took about 6 hrs, but the little heat from the light bulb was enough to defrost the water line.
