Try booting in safe mode and see if the screen displays properly. Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it
back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE
MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look
different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is
normal. Try connecting another monitor to the computer.
Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and
connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor shows the 1 inch
black space then your video card might be going bad or you might have a
virus infection. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok then your original
monitor is bad.

1024 X 768 is the ideal setting for a 17" Monitor. Are you still getting sound output despite the error message? If no sound then your integrated sound card has failed, you will have to install anew one in the PCI Slot, otherwise forget about the warning & keep listening. You could try visiting the Official website to see if any driver updates have been released till date and refresh the drivers(sound) installation...............sodeep
PS: Check your Floppy drive? If not working simply disconnect and likewise in the BIOS if REQUIRED.

They are very easy to replace. I have never had much luck trying
repairs. And too they are only about $20-$25 if you shop carefully to
replace.

If she just deleted and did not remove properly via "add or remove programs", you can try going to your "recycle bin" and just restore the deleted files. You will need to double click on the recycle icon and find your deleted files. If you find them, just right click on them and click restore.
If they are permanently gone, you will need to reinstall the program either from http://www.sophos.com/ or find the install cd software.
The 3rd way you can restore them is to do a "system restore"
click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore
You will need a date before you wife deleted the files.
