My amana washer doesn't have a fabric softner slot, when I unlock the lid to add fabric softner it starts the whole load over again. How is the best way to add fabric softner to the rinse cycle.
Check and see if there is a cup in the top of the agitator. Some machines have you put it there, turning back and forth during wash doesn't bother it, but the spin to empty the wash water causes the softener to go out through slots in the top of the cup and be held in the agitator. when it stops the softener drains into the tub, ready for the rinse cycle.
I'm guessing that maybe you are holding the button in too long and cancelling the cycle, just press quickly to pause and
add fabric softener, if it is spinning when you press the button it won't unlock the
lid until it stops spinning ...
START/STOP/PAUSE/UNLOCK LID BUTTON
Press to start the selected cycle; press again to pause
the cycle and unlock the lid.
NOTE: If the washer is spinning, it may take several
minutes to unlock the lid. Press and hold for 3 seconds
to cancel a cycle.

Add softener/ sanitizer thru lid slot (indentation in top at the front of the lid, where hand lifts it up), usually located far enough over the drum to flow down into it, without having to open the lid.
What question are any of you answering. The issue is the washing machine was not made with a fabric softener cup, dispenser or any other means of putting fabric softener in the wash. Why Amana built this model washer without this option is a mystery. This leaves only the option of pouring the fabric softener in during the rinse cycle which requires unlocking the lid which........restarts the entire wash cycle apparently
SOURCE: Bleach and Fabric Softner Dispenser
This is absolutely normal and you dont have to worry about it..
The reason for this:
The fabric softener compartment uses an over flow method to get the
fabric softener out of its compartment and into the wash load. Water
comes up underneath through a syphon tube and gently fills the fabric
softener dispenser and causes it to over flow in its diluted state. The
reason for this is that it is the most effective way for fabric
softener to be diluted prior to hitting the clothes in the drum. Fabric
softener has to be diluted before coming into contact with fabrics.
This is in contrast to how detergents dispensers work which simply
flush the soap powder in to the drum by water being squirted on to it
from above.
It is perfectly normal to have a fabric softener dispenser full of
clean water after the wash cycle. Just lift and empty it out when you
need to fill it with fabric softner for your next wash

According to the whirlpool FAQ's page, that is normal. They stated that at the end of the cycle, fresh water is used to clean the detergent holders. Not sure that I believe them though.

Likely the motor (or controller) is bad. Further tests are necessary.

SOURCE: Tricity Bendix washer won't take fabric softner in rinsing cycle
Your machine possibly has a defective water inlet valve which is preventing water from entering the dispenser channel to flush the fabric softner into the machine. The inlet valve in inside of your machine right where the washer hoses attach. the solenoid valves on the inlet will need to be checked with a multimeter to verify if they are working properly.
SOURCE: My Frigidaire front load washer will not dispense
Clean the dispenser drawer if water is introduced into the fabric softener cavity but does not dispense. Pull the dispenser drawer out until it stops and push down the release tab marked "PUSH" and then pull the dispenser out completely.
Lift the dispenser drawer cover and clean the tubes both in the dispenser drawer and the cover.
Turn the drawer over then release the conveyor from the tabs and lift it off. Clean the conveyor and the drawer thoroughly.
Snap the conveyor into the tabs back into position and then reinstall the dispenser cover making sure the tubes are properly seated.
Slide the dispenser drawer back into the drawer opening while pushing down the part marked "PUSH".
Let us know if the fabric softener dispenser still does not dispense while both the detergent and bleach dispensers dispense.
