4 inch dark grey/blackish horizontal bar top quarter of screen.

Dark bar about quarter way down on sceeen. Appears after set is on for about ten minutes and then remains. Picture and sound are perfect. turn set off and bar is visible until lamp shuts down.

    Turned tv on next day and bar is gone. Left on for 10 hours and it has not returned. Can only think it has something to do with heat and/or humidity or a combination. will wait and see.

Hi,

First step is to unplug the 120 vac power for a few minutes to clear any corrupted data that may be present in the controller circuits.

If a "power" reset doesn't help and the lamp or bulb is installed correctly, you most likely have a failed replacement bulb. The symptoms are all standard indications of a failed bulb.

Reduced lamp life can be caused by:

  1. Lightning and other 120 vac power bumps.
  2. Collisions with vacuum cleaners or other incidental impacts while the TV bulb is operating.
  3. Starting the TV without a complete cool down. Bulb will consume a small amount of mercury with each start. Excessive consumption occurs when bulb is "Hot" and turned on.
  4. Wrong bulb installed as replacement.(Philips original replaced with Osram or El Cheapo)
  5. Poor quality or damaged bulb installed as replacement.
  6. Bulb damaged during replacement
  7. Bulb installed incorrectly at replacement.
Almost all Hitachi 55vs69 "No Picture" failures are related to the bulb.

Many of our service events are with customers that purchased El Cheapo bulbs from "shopping cart" websites or picked up a bulb from a small "local" TV shop. Many small shops stock of 3 or 4 bulbs and try to substitute or cross reference to fit more than 200 models of TVs from 7 different manufacturers. If a premature bulb failure occurs, they have the opportunity to sell you some expensive service.

On the top border of the screen there is a 9 inch part of the edge that is dark and it fades down into the screen.

There may be screen damage and that entire part of your screen may just contain dead pixels.

A dark horizontal band with edges that gradually brighten (as opposed to a sharp black bar) indicates a fluorescent tube that isn't lighting up properly (check to see if the band lines up with a wire coming from the inverter board to confirm). A normally operating inverter will shut down all of the lamps if it detects a fault in one of them, but perhaps the tube is only weak and not dead.

I'm not sure what the bright patch is - perhaps the LCD was subjected to uneven pressure while you were working on the set (perhaps by being laid down on a bunched-up towel), or something is deforming the back reflector inside the lamp box behind the LCD (maybe one of the screws for the inverter board is too long and actually belongs somewhere else).

Dark Grey Vertical Bar

1. try connecting laptop to an external monitor and check if this vertical dark gray bar appears. if yes it means video is the problem. you need to boot in safe mode then uninstall the video driver. boot to notmal mode then download and install the latest video driver. if still same problem then replace video card. if video is built in with motherboard you need to replace motherboard.

2. when the vertical dark gray bar did not appear in the external monitor then it means issue is with the LCD panel. Do this turn off laptop. press and hold D key then press Power button at the same time or Press and hold on the Fn key then Power button check if the test will run. Color displays full screen when you keep pressing on N key when the colors appears check the vertical dark gray bar if still exist in the test, this means LCD panel and LCD cable needs to be replaced.
