My remote only works within five feet of the TV. This is both its own remote and the DirecTv remote, both of which I have changed with new batteries. This issue suddenly arose yesterday
Either the lens on the front of the set for the remote receiver is dirty etc or the infrared receiver in the set is bad.
The having to get very close and the fact more than one remote reacts this way means the trouble is the receiver is bad.
I have seen this a few HUNDRED times in my career.

10 Steps to Program Your Directv Remote
1. Turn on television.
2. Locate the switch at the top of your remote that allows you to toggle between receiver, auxilary, and TV modes. Slide switch over to"TV".
3. Hold down MUTE and SELECT until a small green light at the top of the switch blinks twice.
4. Enter code 9911.
5. Press and release the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly until television turns off.
6. When TV turns off, press SELECT.
7. Next, press the power button. This should turn the TV back on.
8. With television on, press and hold down MUTE and SELECT again until the small light blinks twice (same as in step 3).
9. Entercode 960.
10. Slide switch back over to "DTV". Your remote is now ready to use!

hi, it could be either 1 of 2 things.
1.remote is faulty, if the remote used to work but now doesntand you are sure the batteries are good, its probably not that.
2. a faulty IR / Remote Control Sensor Board . very common problem with an easy cheap replacement. here is a link to one for $20, just remove the back of the tv and remove and replace the new board. be careful when working inside the tv, lots of fragile things in there!
