It wont turn on. Ive put new batteries in, old batteries, rechargeable batteries and even an ac power cable but it will not turn on. Could it be a problem with the power button itself?
I know I'm too late with this answer for the original post, but if anyone new finds this while searching for an answer for a canon sx10 is that won't start, try this.
Open the battery compartment remove the batteries, now take another close look at the battery compartment. You should see a tab with "CR1220" written on it. Get your fingernail under the tab and lift. You will remove a CR1220 lithium button battery. This battery seems to function like the PRAM battery on a computer mother board, if it's dying the camera will loose it's date settings, if it's dead the camera won't start. Replace the battery and slide the tab gently back in place.
Yes that good very well be the problem. if it is the problem then most likely it has been damaged some how.

I had this problemt too. I cleaned the contacts with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, then replaced the batteries with Duracell (not the cheaper Sunbeams I had been using). This worked like a charm.

I have the same problem too. It's just started happening. The camera is about 3 years old. I've cleaned the battery contact points with an eraser and ensured there's contact. All seems fine. I only get about 5 shots out of brand new AA batteries, then a black screen with message 'change the batteries'. Can anyone help?

This happened with my Canon Powershot A470. I sent it back to he manufacturer and they said I was using the wrong batteries. Even though the camera is supplied with two alkaline batteries, they recommend using AA NimH rechargable batteries.

The A520 is designed to work with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible.
You need to use SD cards 2GB and smaller.
The problem is in the battery holder of the CR1220
battery.
-Take out the CR1220 battery (the little round one).
-When
you replace it, put a bit of aluminum foil against the back, between the
battery and the plastic holder, to make it a nice tight fit. One layer won't do
it, but don't put in half the roll.
-Put it
back in. Done
Using a
fresh battery & clean it all with alcohol = good idea as well. Worked for me.
