A component in the TV is failing and is not receiving correct voltage, which is causing the TV to enter " protection mode" and shut off. Could be any part of the TV but I would start with the power supply and go from there.

Here is some basic info on testing the power supply.

Mine does the same thing but it also shuts itself

These usually have a good Warranty as this is a Best Buy product. They would be sure to fix it under the waranty if you take it in. They would be able to give you an estimate of repair if you take it in also. They may have a flat fix fee or possibly an hourly fee along with what the power supply or bad part cost.
Usually a power supply problem. 42" is still an expensive TV to replace. May be best to repair.

50" Plasma turns off and back on without picture; audio stays on

Yes, you are correct. there are a few component issues on the power circuit board that will need to be replaced. the mani component will be the capacitors and transistors.if not repaired soon, this unit will completely stop working.

Samsung HP-R5052 Plasma TV

It related with Power Board(50%) or Y-Main(50%).
But, if you use the power bar with surge protacton, need to check
the power bar's lamp when the TV is turning on & off.

Picture is snowy/dark

update: Well, we ended up calling the repair man and we had a bad Y-sustain board and also a bad Z-sustain board. According to the guy who fixed it, it was due to over use of the TV and using main power button instead of shutting off through the cable remote. 650.00 later and a few weeks later, we now have a fixed plasma. No real suggestions on how to get more life out of the new boards.
