The error that you are having is a hardware issue, it means your printer has an Ink System Failure. Believe me, there's no use going through troubleshooting for this one. Call HP and just Upgrade your printer. HP Printer Tech Support would be more than happy in giving you discounts and an extra year of warranty for $1.00.
The error message 242 appears in HP Photomart C7180, when the remote machine (the fax machine at Fax Sender side), is having problem, and it is trying to receive fax instead of sending. So actually both these machines try to receive the fax at the same time.
On many fax machines it is possible to accediently initiate the fax reception when:
1. The paper is not loaded in the machine
2. Or The paper is not correctly loaded.
You may contact the fax sender to check the above things. There is absolutely no problem with machine at your end.
It sounds like your C7180 has an internal error condition and may need to be reset. It may be easier for you to view this solution online from HP support:
If your product is in warranty then I recommend you to contact HP support to service or replace the unit. Otherwise perform the steps given below and verify the results.
Turn on the unit.
Disconnect the power cord from the back of the unit.
Press and hold the #
and 7
buttons simultaneously.
While still holding down the #
and 3
buttons, connect the power cord to the back of the unit.
Continue holding the buttons until the Power
button blinks.
Follow the instructions that display on the unit to select the language settings.
I have the HP C7280 and I was able to fix the problem. HP seems to have 3 trays. The bottom tray is for the paper. The middle one has a small blue tray for the photos and the top tray is where the paper comes out. Well I lifted the top tray where the paper comes out (it can angle up) and then I clicked OK on the problem. I may have even rebooted, but then I got a new error message which is good. It said to push photo tray (the small blue tray) all the way in which I pulled out and pushed back in. Then I pushed the top tray down so all is flat again. I clicked OK and it re-calibrated with no more error messages! Hope this helps.
