This seem to happen mostly when the weather is warm. I have had the car serviced and checked out but the problem still persist. The car runs fine but the message bothers me. Any suggestions?
Having a car serviced, is called preventative maintenance,
oil,spark plugs,gas filter,brakes & the like
That has nothing to do with diagnosing your concerns
Checked out, is just that. Someone that doesn't know how to
diagnose your cars problems
You need to have the problem you are concerned about, actually
looked into.
That could be time consuming & costly & may even work out
better for you at a dealership
I would prefer you start with a repair shop as it is cheaper
Bottom line is that no one actually put the effort into finding the cause
A repair shop either doesn't have a data base to learn about your
car or the skills to do the job
They are not going to spend time on something, when they
can not bill you for a lot of hours, you simply won't spend the money,
so they don't fix it

4. Activate the alarm
5. Wait 30-35 sec
6. Get out of the car
7. Stop the alaram
8. Get in the car
9. Put the key on the position II, without starting the engine
10. Push the button READ
The alarm led must blink. Then you alarm is reset.

SOURCE: Transmission Service Required message
They are correct as to the Location of the Sensor and, It would be a Time Consuming and Expensive Repair But, If you are not getting the Red Caution Light I would have the Tranny Flushed and Filled and see if it is not Just Buildup on the Sensor. It could actually Release itself. If not you will eventually have to get a Rebuild Buut, Try the Flush and Fill First.
SOURCE: i have engine service required message and fault code 042
P0042 : Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)bank1, heater control -circuit malfunction.
The code is telling you one of the oxygen sensors or the wiring to it is faulty.
SOURCE: message system reads "engine system maintenance required"
WHAT HAPPENED IS WHEN YOU SHUT DOWN AND RESTARTED YOU (RESET THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT COMPUTER) AND THE SERVICE LIGHT SHOULD GO OUT AFTER 10 MINUTES OF DRIVING
SOURCE: reset check and service engine lights
It's in the console under the coin holder, in front of the gear shifter. You have to remove the coin holder and you will see it.

Thanks for your reply. I may have used the wrong terminology but I have been using the same Volvo/foreign car repair shop for over eight years now and have been quite satisfied with them so far. They claim and seem to be Volvo specialists. When the problem first appear I took it in to them and they did the service that came due around that time. Two weeks later the problem appeared again. I took it back and they kept the car two days to diagnose the problem. When I picked the car up he told me that it was not showing any code and he did not find a problem. The next time the message appear I went to Autozone and they hooked up their diagnostic gizmo and also said it was not showing any code. Before I go to a dealer, I just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem. Thanks again
