I noticed my fan motor in the freezer making a racket. I thought maybe it was going out. When I took the cover off though, I saw that an accumalation of frost had built up around it. Latelt the freezer has been building up frost then defrosting quickly. I have been told this could be the defrost timer. What is your opinion?
Hello,
that is just one of the probable problem. you still need to check the other two.
the defrost heater ( heating element).
and the bimetal ( thermo disc).
the heating element, you need to test the resistance. there should be a resistance lower than 100 ohms depending on its wattage and voltage.
the thermodisc or bi-metal, you need to test this while it is frozen. there should be a continuity between the two wires while the unit is frozen. it will open up when it is thawed.

wow, now it did get worst. kindly check the compressor if it is running.
that is the big black thing at the back. it should be hot and vibrating. then the fan besides it should be running also.

hello again,
if the compressor is running and there is no frost in the evaporator, then there could be a leak in your system and you have no refrigerant gas in it.
if this is the case, you will need a technician to repair your unit.

here's the problem though....now it's only working part of the time. It isn't building up frost...and barely keeps things frozen...the refridgerator section is kaput!
yup it's hot and the fan is running
