Gives me i/o error message on seagate 880gb when trying to copy files to laptop

If your PC is still running Win98 then it probably has a USB version 1.0 port. I don't think the Faster USB version 2.0 devices will work properly even if you have the correct driver - i.e. you have a hardware version conflict. Try Purchasing a USB version 2.0 Daughter board for the PC and plugging the Seagate drive into that iinstead.

One of the most important yet overlooked elements of PC maintenance is data backup. If you do not perform regular backups, chances are your productivity will eventually suffer from data losses or a failed Windows installation.

All versions of Windows after 3.1 ship with a free backup utility called Microsoft Backup. It is not the best backup program available, but it may be sufficient for your needs. (Backup is better in later versions of Windows. Microsoft recommends Win98/Me users purchase a third-party utility.) If you want more control over your backups, consider purchasing a third-party program.

Backup is part of the System Tools utility. However, Setup does not install it by default in Win98/Me/XP Home. If you cannot locate Backup, visit the Microsoft support site and query for article No. 152561 (Win98), No. 264541 (WinMe), or No. 302894 (WinXP Home).

In Win98/Me, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Backup. To create and run a backup, click the Create A New Backup Job radio button and click OK. Follow the prompts to create a full or partial backup. If you want to create a backup set and run it later or run an existing backup set, open Backup and click the Open An Existing Backup Job radio button and click OK. You can now access the main Backup dialog box.

In Win2000/XP, navigate to the System Tools utility and select Backup. Click the Backup Wizard button. If you do not see a Backup Wizard button, click the Welcome tab. In WinXP, the wizard will start automatically if you are in wizard mode. Follow the prompts to create your backup set.

When you reach the last dialog box, Completing The Backup Wizard, you can click the Advanced button to create a backup schedule (this option is not available in Win98/Me). When you reach the When To Back Up dialog box, select the Later radio button and click the Set Schedule button. Perform data backups on a schedule that is appropriate to the importance of your files (once a week is a common timeframe). You should also perform a system backup at least once a month.

If you do not want to use the wizard, or you are working with an existing backup, open Backup and click the Backup tab to access the main Backup dialog box.

Hi George,

The seagate freeagent should be reconigized by windows. The question is are you adding an additional partition or do you want to create a brand new partion. I'm assuming you want to add.

You can add more space to existing primary partitions and logical drives by extending them into adjacent, contiguous unallocated space on the same disk. To extend a basic volume, it must be formatted with the NTFS ile system. You can extend a logical drive within contiguous free space in the extended partition that contains it. If you extend a logical drive beyond the free space available in the extended partition, the extended partition grows to contain the logical drive as long as the extended partition is followed by contiguous unallocated space.

To extend a basic volume

1. Open Command Prompt.
2. Type: diskpart
   
3. At the DISKPART prompt, type: list volume
   Make note of the number of the basic volume you want to extend.
   
4. At the DISKPART prompt, type: select volume n
   Selects the basic volume, n, you want to extend into contiguous, empty space on the same disk.
   
5. At the DISKPART prompt, type: extend [size=n] Extends the selected volume by size=n megabytes (MB).
   

Value Description list volume Displays a list of basic and dynamic volumes on all disks. select volume Selects the specified volume, where n is the volume number, and shifts the focus to it. If no volume is specified, the select command lists the current volume with focus. You can specify the volume by number, drive letter, or mount point path. On a basic disk, selecting a volume also gives the corresponding partition focus. extend Extends the volume with focus into next contiguous unallocated space. For basic volumes, the unallocated space must be on the same disk as, and must follow (be of higher sector offset than) the partition with focus. A dynamic simple or spanned volume can be extended to any empty space on any dynamic disk. Using this command, you can extend an existing volume into newly created space. If the partition was previously formatted with the NTFS file system, the file system is automatically extended to occupy the larger partition. No data loss occurs. If the partition was previously formatted with any file system format other than NTFS, the command fails with no change to the partition.
You cannot extend the current system or boot partitions.
size=n The amount of space, in megabytes (MB), to add to the current partition. If you do not specify a size, the disk is extended to take up all of the next contiguous unallocated space.
Notes

• To open a command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
• You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.
• To extend a basic volume, it must be formatted with the NTFS file system.
• You can only extend a basic volume onto the same disk.
• You can only extend a basic volume if it is followed by contiguous unallocated space.

Under the Gear looking icon located on each window, there will be a delte option. Just click what you would like to delete, click the icon and press delete.
