Describe the issue if you can please.
That's not good news especially if it happens to be black or dark---people who post questions here often for whatever reason do not reply--those have my attention.
A line that is top to bottom (black is the worst) indicates a issue in one of a few areas.
Set has a main board that controls what is on every area of the screen.
Set will also have a board or boards that can cause either a single or many lines--these are connected to the front display panel which is the screen you view the picture on--a little Google or visit to a place like shopjimmy.com will reveal in many cases what boards the set uses---for Samsung they have for almost every model a breakdown of all the boards and costs.
The boards are usually ruled in or out by replacement--
The worst case is the problem is inside the front screen unit--the Panel--that is fatal as it cannot be got at in that sealed unit--cost of the panel will exceed the price of a new set.
A shop who for example looks at a set like yours can only test a few things and then they have to replace boards to see if it cures the issue or if not the panel is bad.
over 35 years of fixing every kind of set you can imagine from black and white to big screen projection to Plasma and LCD sets---the new way is replace boards and hope one fixes the problem.
No individual parts are sold--just the boards---a bit like having to buy a new engine for your car if the fuel pump is out.
Hope all this at least informed you in some way. I do this here for free to help people.
Brand does not matter--average in our shop is 80-100 sets of this type are in for repair and over 85 percent are under 3 years.
Get as long a warranty as you can--I suggest at least 3 years--not so much that it might be repaired but like renter insurance---if covered they have to either fix it or replace it.
I am aware a lot of people do not like extended warranties "Its not old so how come it failed?"
I have seen sets where a board was needed and for a number of reasons was not available at all--extended warranty has to bite the bullet on that--money back or a new set for free.
The only real choice is buy a set cheap enough you do not care--lasts two years and blows up--just buy a new one.
I don't know about you but that does not describe me--hate to waste or see other people waste money.
Some are willing to gamble but these newer sets are mostly a bad gamble as far as life---average on them is 3-5 years regardless of brand or cost.

Well i wanted to add a picture but i dont see how you can do it on this site. Basically it is a spreading vertical dark area that started at the edge of the high definition line and is spreading to the center of the screen. It is about 2 inches wide now.
it runs from top to bottom of the screen
Thanks for your info. You seem very knowledgeable. I was afraid it would cost more to fix than it would be to replace it so I guess ill just go with another brand in the future. The set is only 3 years old. Very disappointing. Any brands that you recommend?
when i say "dark area" it dark like blackish but you can see through it. Its not totally opaque black
