Dishwasher will not drain

Model # DU850SWPQ2 Whirlpool dishwasher

Type 280-0

Unit will not drain after a complete wash/rinse cycle complete. I was able to siphon water out of drain hose so I don't think blockage is the problem.

Has just started to happen in the last 3 weeks.

The website did not prove useful, but the suggestion to check the "check valve" was helpful. I removed the machine and found the checkvalve on the bottom. I found a rubber gasket that was blown out of place and stopped the ball in the valve from moving. I simply replaced the gasket - where I thought it should be or looked like it should be - and it seems to work fine. Time will tell.

Hello Tom,
Glad that you were able to find something out of place in the check valve ( like the gasket) which in turn was restricting the ball in that check valve from being in the right position. I'd be willing to bet that your problem is solved..
Regards,
Rick

Hello Tom_Simmers,
Here is a link with exploded views and parts lists for your dishwasher for reference however based on your description, have you made sure you don't a blockage in the check valve? That's part of the pump drain assembly. http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php

You may also have a problem with the pump itself so the documentation on the website will help you evaluate that.
In many instances, its just a blockage of food byproducts inline with the drain system so chances are thats what you will find.. Good Luck on that.
Regards,
Rick

Whirlpool dishwasher, quiet partner 1. Does not drain, does not finish wash cycle.

ensure your dishwasher pump and drain hose are unobstructed. If your machine does not drain it will not refill with fresh rinse water and since it can't do that the cycle will never finish.

Many people don't completely rinse off food stuffs from their dishware, expecting the dishwasher to take care of it. To be honest, a dishwasher is more of a fine cleaning and disinfecting device than a pot scrubber. Because of this, grease, food debris, etc can clog the pump or drain line over time. be sure to use a good de-greasing agent regularly once the flow of water has been cleared (don't wash your dishes with it however)

Whirlpool dishwasher does not drain. Wash arm operates correctly

Check the drain hose under your sink make sure its not crushed or kinked if you have a garbage disposal the hose should go up into it at a 90 degree angle if not 180 degrees into your sink drain line

Dishwasher runs for appx 14 min & stops washing half way thru wash cycle. Timer contunies to run. No drain pump out (nothing). Let dishwasher set idle for appx 1 hour and it will re-set. Set timer...

This sounds like something is stuck in the drain pump. You can remove the inner cover to look for obstructions. You have a dual purpose motor it does the both circulating and draining. The blockage is causing it to overheat and trip the thermal protector. You can remove the drain assembly from underneath if you don't find anything from above. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that walks you thru most of this. It is a different model but pretty close. If you find no obstructions the motor may be failing.

AFTER THE WASH AND RINSE CYCLE IT DOES NOT SEEM TO

Bad pump or a kink in the drainline between the appliance and the garbage disposal. And since we're speaking of garbage disposals check to see if scum hasn't built up at the drain orfice on the dishwasher.

Good Luck

Dishwasher keeps tripping electric

Two things to consider....clean water or dirty water?
Clean water usually indicates the fill valve is not shutting off all the way and the fill valve is "weeping" water in all the time = new fill valve time!!
Dirty water usually is not a dishwasher problem but more of a plumbing issue. Often the sink drain that carries the sinks water outside is not fast enough and some of this sink water is backing up into the drain hose and filling up the dishwasher through the drain hose. The drain from the sink to outside needs attention as this type of a problem indicates a slow house drain for that sink.
The dishwasher drain line should be clamped to the top underneath part of the counter before entering the sink drain plumbing, this may help the water from coming back inside the dishwash
If the cycle doesn't complete, check these:

Water-heating cycle
Timer
Water-heating cycle Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

  • On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

  • On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature. If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Timer Timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.
