Boot up with the Windows XP installation CD (you will need the Product Installation code) then proceed to install Windows XP follow the instruction to delete the existing partition - create a new partition - then Format the partition (not a quick Format) - this will wipe the hard disk and install a clean Windows XP system.

I had Windows 98 OS on my desktop and I wiped it out and installed Windows XP. My system performed better before I did this, how do I get rid of XP and reinstall Windows 98? I don't have the Windows 98 CD...

If you don't have the Windows 98 CDROM, or an image backup of your Windows 98 installation (if you don't know what an image is then you don't have one) then you're in a tough spot.

You can't just "go back" to your Windows98 machine, you will have to reinstall Windows 98 from a CDROM. So you will have to find a disc from someone/somewhere and hope it's the same version of 98 that your product key was for (if you have the product key). Or you can purchase a new copy of Windows 98SE. They cost around $55 from several websites (viosoftware.com for one).

On another note, if you computer is running slower with XP it's most likely due to the amount of RAM being low. Try to get at least 1GB of RAM in your current PC and you'll probably see XP run better. You could also try installing Ubuntu, it's a free operating system.

that should run xp just fine but if you still want to go to windows 98 you should know all the software out there isent supported by windows 98 anymore so its going to cause you more problems then you would like but if you STILL want to do it

you need a floppy disk and it needs to be formated to a win98 boot disk make sure theres oakcdrom.dll in those files on the floppy disk put it in and reboot to dos from there go to the cd rom drive normaly you would type cd D:\setup.exe that will start the install as long as you have the cd in GOOD LUCK

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

Continuous restarting with winxp

On computers that contain Windows 98 and Windows XP: ? Windows 98 must be installed on a basic disk on a partition formatted with FAT or FAT32. If Windows 98 or Windows Me is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, the system partition must also be formatted with FAT or FAT32. ? Compressed DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes won't be available while you are running Windows XP. It is not necessary to uncompress DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes that you will access only with Windows 98. ? Windows XP must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed for starting Windows XP could be overwritten
