First, check to make sure you're not in the macro mode. There's a slide switch on the end of the camera, near the SD card slot. Slide the switch away from the flower toward the mountain to take it out of macro mode. The flash won't fire in macro mode.
Then, if the flash still doesn't fire, take a look at the flash mode. Press the up-arrow button to bring up the flash menu. If it's currently set in the lightning-bolt-in-a-circle-with-a-slash-through-it symbol, you've got the flash turned off. Set it to the lightning-bolt-and-"A" for automatic flash or the lightning-bolt for forced flash.
If the flash still doesn't fire, then it's broken.
The Nikon Coolpix is a compact digital camera that is well-suited for amateur to semi-professional photographers. Occasionally, some issues with the built-in flash can occur. If the hardware is damaged, the camera must be taken in for repairs. More often, problems occur because of obstructions or issues with the camera's settings and are easily repairable. Follow the troubleshooting guide to fix the built-in flash.
Instructions: 1.Ensure the Nikon Coolpix digital camera battery is fully charged. 2.Wait several seconds before pressing the shutter-release button if the "Flash Ready" indicator light is flashing red. Press the "Flash Mode" button once or twice to change the flash settings from "Off" to "On" or "Auto" if the "Flash Ready" indicator light is off. 3.Ensure there are no obstructions, like your finger or the camera strap, that are preventing the flash from firing if an error message appears on the display screen and the flash is not firing when the flash mode is set to automatic. 4.Press the flash back into the camera after every photo to ensure the flash always fires in "Auto" mode instead of just in low illumination settings. Press the flash back into the camera to turn off the flash in "Manual" mode; otherwise the flash will continually fire. 5.Change the auto focus setting from "Infinity" to "Auto," "Macro Closeup" or "Self-Timer" by pressing the "Focus Mode" button once, twice or three times to automatically turn the flash back on. 6.Use only Nikon external flash accessories to avoid damage to the built-in flash and camera circuits.
I actually just fooled around with mine because it was doing the same thing. It will only flash in the scene mode, but not the normal quickshot mode. i noticed under the camera symbol on the screen said BSS and i went into the menu and clicked on BSS and turned it off b/c it was on and that worked finally.maybe u can try it, if its the same situation.
make sure when you press the round selection button on the back of the camera flash option, you press the ok in the center of the button on the back.
it will show brief yellow AUTO in the LCD screen upper right corner for a sec.
when you are going to take a picture holding the shutter button half way down, you should see up at the right corner outside of the LCD screen a red led flashing to indicate flash is ready.
one thing to try if this is not working, find the camera reset option in the menu. after doing this you may have to reset the date & time. it will bring the camera back to default settings
on the bad side if these dont work, possible flash circuit may have failed inside the camera.
This may be the same problem that requires you to press the LOCK button to actually take a picture. I found a solution and have posted to the questions mentioning the LOCK problem. Anyways, here goes, if that is not the problem please disregard what follows:
Same problem that would not allow me to take a picture without pressing
the LOCK button on my Nikon 8700. Here is how I believe I fixed the
problem:
Turn the camera ON.
Press MENU button on your camera to bring up the menu.
Scroll down to SET-UP, open the SET-UP menu by scrolling right.
In the SET-UP menu, scroll all the way down to FUNC (Controls) on page 2/3 , open the FUNC (Controls) menu by scrolling right.
You are now presented with 2 options:FUNC and AE-L, AF-L)
Select the FUNC option by right scrolling.
Choose the 2nd option: i.e the mountain, flower and timer icon (distance, macro and self-timer icon) by right scrolling.
