Craftsman Garage Door Opener Won't Open

All of a sudden today the motor for the garage door opener runs but the chain doesn't move and the door doesn't open. Any suggestions?

Because it's way too cold here this time of year to live without an opener and because my husband isn't really very handy, I did have a garage door repair person come over. It was indeed a stripped gear. Thanks for your help.

When mine did this, it was because the nylon gears that drive the chain had stripped. My wife had to live without the opener for a week or more, but I was able to find a new gear kit online and replace the damaged gears. It wasn't difficult.
The other option is to buy a new opener.

Check the gear on top of the motor box.A set screw probably came loose that holds the chain gear to the motor shaft.

If the motor is running and the chain or belt isn't moving, you have a broken gear in the opener.

All garage door openers have a quick release. Have you checked to make sure that is locked in place? Most have a cord hangin from it and you pull it which releases it from the chain. Make sure that is engaged and it should work.

I have a Craftsman garage door opener, model# 13953674srt1. It will not open or close the door. The motor sounds normal & runs the entire cycle but the chain is not moving. What is the problem?

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear is stripped. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at any good door service company.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket. Run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. With the door in the open position replace the chain. You will probably need to adjust your open and close limits per your owners manual.

Craftsman opener motor works, but chain does not move.

If the motor is working but the chain does not move you must remove the cover on the motor and check to see that the chain is on the sprocket. If the chain is on the sprocket and the sprocket is not moving but the motor shaft is moving then the sprocket must be retightened onto the motor shaft.
