I brought a second hand laptop and cant log onto it as previous owners have account name and passwords but i dont know password. how do i change this
What OS are you having?
Reset windows password as following instruction :
On XP you can try this:
Boot computer and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice when you See Windows welcome screen / login screen. It'll show classic login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in username field and leave password field blank, press Enter and you should be able to login Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".
On Win 7 or Vista:
Ctrl+Alt+Delete won't work, you have to use some windows password recovery software. I recommend Windows Password Reset .

There are two places when you may be asked for a password - can you please clarify which one it is.
There is a reasonably easy solution for both of these.

Oh, you must be an Administrator, right? If there is another Administrator account on the PC, it can restore your password through User Account Settings -> Manage Another Account.
If not, I have a complex way. First, restart the PC. When it shows the HP logo when booting up, press the button for Setup (it is shown at the bottom of the screen, and it is F8 on my HP tx2001au).
Now, don't get scared by what appears. It looks a bit complex, but it is very simple and easy.
Navigate using the keyboard. Press the right button to move to the Security section. Here, press Enter on the Administrator Password option. Now enter and confirm a new password and you're done.
See the bottom of the screen for the button for 'Quit Saving Changes' and the computer will reboot. Now, I guess you can enter the new password.
If this doesn't work, see online for ways to reset a password in Vista. There are some softwares to burn to a CD and use.
If it is an XP, I guess there is nothing to do. Just press Ctrl+Alt+Del on the logon screen to see the classic logon screen. Type in the username 'Administrator' without quotation marks and the password blank. Press Enter and enjoy.

On the recovery partition should be a file "aimsdrs.dat" - if you can open this in a text editor, it will show you the current password and password hint in plain text

If the cmos is password protected, then you must reset the cmos. The best way to remove any signs previous owners is to reformat or do a system restore. You ca do this with the disks that came with the computer, you should put the system restore disk in and be on your way. Just follow the on screen instructions and you should be all set.
Hope this helps
