I recorded on a double-sided DVD-R disc and both sides were full. I successfully finalized side A and when I tried to finalize side B, it said something like "incompatible disc," and said there were 0 videos! I called Canon tech support and was told that you can't use double-sided discs w/ this camcorder b/c the heat from finalizing makes it so you can't finalize the second side. I asked him if my videos are now erased and he suggested putting the DVD in my computer and downloading DVD recovery software. I did that, but the software (and my computer) both say it's a blank disc. I think any other source will see it as blank until it's finalized, which of course my camcorder won't do. I am soooooo bummed....my baby boy was born the end of July, and this is all of the videos from the first 4 months of his life. I'm so upset to have lost all those precious memories. :( Anyone know of a way I can retrieve the videos or are they gone forever?
If the subject is Dual layer, this is recorded and used on one side only...It holds over 8gigs..I can understand the confusion with the given name..Hope this helps.
If you had read the manual, it would probably have told you this. .It might be worth seeing if someone at your local friendly computer shop can assist you - they may have access to software that will help.

I think it is a problem with the camera.
We had one, couldn't finalize, exchanged that, and still the same problem.
Canon NO help whatsoever.
Even the mini disc companies that we purchased, NO help either.
We are returning this camera and going with a hard drive.
We were able to plug the camera to a DVD recorder and copy onto a full size disc.

Perhaps the microphone was muted while you were making the original recording? Have you tried playing back a new recording with the microphone active?

Hello there, please please do not give yourself a heart attack over it, yet yes I quite understand your upset, but you are not the first to do it, your not going to be the last either okay?
The first thing here to tell you is that IF, yes IF you have not put any other filming on said disk you can get data back, you do though have to get a copy of Underlete either from a PC shop like PC World, then with that on the PC you tell it where your mistake disk sits in drive letter and start the undelete program searching okay? cost well that program will set you back about £29 so you will have to ask if you think it's worth it, from what you say I think you will say yes it is.
This problem of killing movies off by accident in these stupid so called DVD/or Mem sticks formats is the main reason why good movie makers like us still to TAPE media, it cannot get killed off by accident.
Testimonial: "Thank you for your suggestion (and kind words) - I will check it out. Actually, right now I am trying to download a free trail of something called Nero which I've read posts on this forum. Does anyone know if Nero does what this "undelete" program might do? I am downloading the whole suite, but not sure exactly what part ot use then - nero rescue?? Can anyone offer more advice, Please?? Thanks."

OK ..first be sure the disk was not already finalized..if it was by an auto function ..than the F icon will appear on the screen ...than be sure you use the correct mode...I suggest the auto ..You mentioned that the disk options are available ...so you have to get into the func..than select menu ..than select disk operations ..and in there it is the finalize option ..or it should be ..
If you have another finalize feature that is not included into the disk operations ..it may be for another process...and not available ..so you have to look further into the disk operations..
if this is not available ..check again the modes..and select the last position and try again ..or ..get into the menu ...select to reset the camera to the factory settings ..and this way you will get rid of any strange setting that may affect the finalizing operation availability ..
Let me know what you have managed to do ..
