My hp pavillion dv7 keyboard lock lights keep flashing; at one point the computer didn't want to boot up; I finally got that up today after six months. But the cap lock and the number lock lights still flash and the battery won't charge and it is less than a year old (the battery).

Those are POST code, error codes, you need to watch time and count them. report them.
leave the battery main out.
does it run ok now? yes/no.? main battery out?.
even new cheap batteries fail easy and hard and short out.
test it with no main battery. it can run on AC power for ever.

are you going to run the COIN cell RTC battery for 10 more years.
it wont make it..
this PC is 10 years old today (can be) so is RTC battery end of life. most fail in 5 to 7 years, says the pink bunny. (and is correct)
the manual shows how to replace it at the real HP Site,
fixya is not hp, not at all.

page 63 shows the way to the RTC

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01918142

if you power on the PC, and hammer the f10 key]
BIOS runs, its menus;
check the time and date here, if wrong the RTC battery is dead.

read page 3 how.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01662442

  • old PC have many points of failure (endless it seems)
  • does the fan run? is it packed in lint, as all are this old.?
  • causing it to overheat?
  • RTC coin cell bad.
  • main battery bad. (just leave it out until the PC runs right again)
  • power pack wires broken, or running real hot.
  • HDD going bad,
  • windows infected?, no OS stated but avoid XP.

HP caps lock POST blink code page is a horror of horrors
no 2008 listing, to name one flaw (2011 and newer sadly)

the pc has 2 batteries, fact.
    some 3,
main, aux main in dvd tray and RTC.
up to 3 batteries, exist. (can)

SOURCE: I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1130 Entertainment

This can be one of those tricky ones, especially if the issue is intermittent. The issue is usually either the ram or the motherboard (main board which everything plugs into). With the model of your unit I personally would suspect MoBo but it is worth checking.

This model should have a built in diagnostic. When you can get the unit to boot, you will need to pay attention to the options at the bottom of the screen when it is first powered on. As this model came with 2 different bios setups, we will have to cover both.

The easier, will have an option to press F9 for a startup options menu. On this menu an option for diagnostics will be listed. You are looking to do either a memory diagnostic or a full system diag.

The other possibility is that you will have the option to press F2 or F10 to enter the bios. Within the mess of menus, there will be an option to perform diagnostics.

If the ram passes the diagnostic, the you will be looking at a motherboard issue, which can become very costly to have repaired unless the unit is under Warranty,

Any further questions please respond.
Best of luck,
-halfs

SOURCE: My HP Pavilion dv5 1125nr

I would start with checking for a power problem. Is the battery dead? Is it plugged into the wall and the computer securely? have you checked the connection to the brick in the middle of the power chord? If any of these are loose, make sure and secure them, if this still doesn't work. unplug it, disconnect the battery, wait a minute and reconnect the battery, then plug everything in again and see if that solves it.

How do i open dv7-1451nr?

Instructions

1

Shut the Pavilion dv7 down and close the screen. After unplugging all cables from the computer, turn it over and remove the battery.
2

Unscrew the six Phillips-head screws holding the large T-shaped panel to the bottom of the Pavilion dv7. Remove the panel and set it aside.
3

Remove the keyboard locking screw--marked by a keyboard-shaped icon--from the top part of the compartment exposed when you removed the T-shaped panel. Reserve the screw.
4

Remove the black Phillips-head screw from next to the wireless adapter inside the T-shaped compartment. This screw holds the Pavilion dv7 optical drive in place.
5

Pull the Pavilion dv7 optical drive gently out of its bay, and then remove the two Phillips-head screws from inside the empty drive bay. Reserve the screws.
6

Remove the Phillips-head screw next to the circular intake fan vent in the corner of the Pavilion dv7.
7

Remove the five Phillips-head screws from inside the empty battery compartment. You should now have removed 16 screws in all. Turn the Pavilion dv7 over and open the screen.
8

Insert a spudger or other flat plastic tool into the seam between the speaker grille and computer casing on the right side of the Pavilion dv7. Gently pry up to begin removing the speaker grille from the computer. As you do this, move the spudger to a new location to pry different areas until the grille is completely disconnected. Mind the ribbon cable connecting the center of the speaker grille to the logic board, and do not lift the grille any higher from the computer than the cable allows.
9

Push both sides of the speaker grille cable lock forward until the cable slides easily out of the logic board connector. Set the speaker grille aside.
10

Remove the four Phillips-head retaining screws above the top row of the Pavilion dv7 keyboard. Lift the keyboard up and forward, and place it face-down on the palm rest.
11

Unlock the Pavilion dv7 keyboard cable connector using the same method as for the speaker grille connector. Slide the cable out of the connector, remove the keyboard and set it aside.
12

Place the new Pavilion dv7 keyboard upside-down on the palm rest. Slide the keyboard into the connector, close the lock and rotate the keyboard down into the computer. Replace the four Phillips-head screws.
13

Slide the speaker grille cable into the connector and close the cable lock. Push the speaker grille into its original position above the Pavilion dv7 keyboard. Press gently on all parts of the speaker grille until it is flush with the computer casing.
14

Close the screen and turn the computer over. Replace the five screws inside the battery compartment, the screw next to the intake fan vent, the two screws inside the empty optical drive bay and the screw inside the T-shaped compartment.
15

Replace the t-shaped panel on the bottom of the Pavilion dv7 and its six screws.
16

Slide the optical drive back into its bay and replace the securing screw.

My HP Pavillion dv7 3112sa won't boot and remains

Hi, at startup try pressing f8, this should give you a menu, select 'start windows with last good configuration', this should restore windows to the state before it started rebooting randomly. Failing that...try starting in 'safemode with command prompt' and then do a 'system restore'- press f8 again at start up and then follow the instructions below. this should restore your system to a previous state when the computer wasn't doing random things.

  1. Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
  3. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
  4. Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.
  5. At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER.
  6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state.
I hope that this helps you to sort out the problem. Toni

How do I remove/replace the keyboard from a HP Pavillion dv7-2277cl

1. Remove 6 screws from the bottom of the case (as shown). These screws hold the accessory cover.

2. Remove one screw securing the CD/DVD drive. Slide the CD/DVD drive to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard. Remove the CD/DVD drive.

3. Remove all marked screws from the bottom of the notebook.
The yellow circled screws secure the keyboard cover, and the green one secures the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

4. Turn the computer display-side up and open it as far as possible. Insert a guitar pick or small flat screwdriver between the keyboard cover and case and slowly move along the side.

5. Lift the keyboard cover. Be careful, it's still connected to the motherboard. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector and disconnect the cable from the LED board. Remove the keyboard cover.

6. Remove the four screws that secure the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

7. Lift the rear edge of the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard until it rests at an angle. Slide the keyboard back to disengage the tabs on the front edge of the keyboard from the top cover and rest it on the display.

8. Release the ZIF connector to which the keyboard cable is attached and disconnect the keyboard cable. Remove the HP Pavilion DV7 keyboard.

Hp pavillion dv7 won't power on

Same issue - solved by disconencting everything (main battery, CMOS battery, RAM, hard disk and wireless card). Held in power button for 20 seconds (HP say this removes any electostatic charge on the main board). Reconnected everything and machine booted to Windows. Ran HP's onboard diagnostics and everything checked out OK.
