Of course. Get a transfer cable to move the 80 g data to the 500g then remove the 80 gig and plug the cable from the 80 g into the 500g.

This is a common issue for G5s. The quickest solution is to open up the computer to see how much dust there is built up inside of the case. If the case has a lot of dust by the fan vent, then it cannot properly get rid of the heat that builds up from processing. Try cleaning that out.

If the computer continues to run hot, there may be some much more major issues, including ram, processor, or hard drive. Ram and hard drive issues are relatively cheap to fix, you can purchase new ram dimms or hard drives on amazon.com or crucial.com. Processors are much harder to replace and it's likely that it would be easier to purchase a new computer, rather than a new processor.

Start with the dust issue, then go from there.

Good luck!

SOURCE: My G4 see the drive

The drive may not be formatted to correctly to work with a Mac as most are pre-formatted for PC use.
Use the Disc Utility on your Mac application to format your drive as Mac OS Extended.
Use the Zero out data option for best results, this may take an hour or two. It's in he Erase section.

Dead hd wd caviar 80 gb

Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB?
I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check the readablility):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.)
2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

I can't open my Ext.hd passport 500gb WX40A69V7960. I see the icon im "my computer" but i can't opened.

It sounds like the drive hasnt been partitioned or formated, you will have to use a partitioning software like FDISK to partition the drive, then format the drive in windows, you may not get the full 500 gb most you are likly to get is around 480gb

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

Hard drive upgrade

It has to have SATA Hard Drive Connector DFHS22FR685, if you have this then I would try to format the hard drive to what your operating system is using, either NFTS or FAT32. The drive may not be properly formated for your system.

Whats the largest replaement HD I can put in my Presario

The HD capacity is defined by the bios software in the computer, if HP/Compaq tells you that 80Gb is the maximum capacity, then I think you should believe them, after all they should be the first one interested in selling more high price products, go for the 80Gb is .
