I actually managed to get it done. It took several hours, but it was an O-ring or gasket that wasn't sitting right between two of the cylinders holding the lenses. The little motor couldn't overcome the friction.
I wouldn't recommend taking apart the lens to anyone that doesn't have some experience, but the 8 or so pieces of the lens all have tiny arrows that when assembled properly all point upwards. Using that in conjunction with working from the innermost to outermost components got the job done.
