I have a Whirlpool side by side. Model # 106.9547610. It's 14 years old. It's not running at all. The lights are on. When I plug it in I hear a click at the Adaptive Defrost Control(part# 2154958) on the Refrigerator side. I loosened this piece to see inside and also hear exactly where it's clicking. That is the only noise it makes when I plug it in.
The model KSRG25FK has a W10353224 Defrost Control Board that is also used as Adaptive defrost meaning it tries to conserve defrost to prevent repeated defrost that timers use, This tends to save wasted energy yet has its problems of its own because it is electronic and as always electronics fail. The word adaptive is used because the electronic defrost attempts to prevent unneeded defrost to save energy. I will try to explain while using Whirlpools Service Manual without provoking Whirlpools multiple defrost systems Copyright Material. If Whirlpool ask that I remove this Manual I will at their request. You will need free download to open this Manual. Click Here=> Defrost Systems Explained Thank You, Sea Breeze

The compressor area is not making one little sound. The clicking is definitely coming from the Adaptive Defrost Control. I just checked it again to make sure.
