Thank you. Yes, we did solve the problem; in fact, it was the way we had solved it one other time, even though I had believed it a fluke then:
we simply disconnected the unit for a couple of hours, plugged it back in and, just as last time, the tray opened easily.

On older models , with a first gen firmware(build before 2010 - 08), this hack works:
Open tray
Type 2, 4, 0, 3, 9, 6 and 0
Press Enter to cycle to region 9
Close the tray
Turn player Off and back On
After that date the firmware was updated and the hacking has became impossible.
