Tv works great for approx. 4-5 minutes then horizontal lines start on the screen until it is so distorted you can't make out the picture then all picture and sound gone ,nothing but the ant races ,turn off for approx. 10 minutes then does it all over again.

That problem is usually cause of faulty capacitors on the power supply board..
Just follow this instruction to fix your TV..
1. Open the back cover of your TV.
2. Look at the power supply board..Its normally connected to the power cord..
3. After that,,try to look at the actual image of capacitors if it is bulged on the top so that you can easily determine the bad capacitors..
4. After that,,try to replaced the bad capacitors using soldering iron and soldering lead..replaced the capacitors only with the same type ratings and value..
5. Some of the capacitors not bulged so its better if have a capacitance meter

If you have the tv on cinerama mode, it is black. If you use the scroll on picture mode it works

This could be a power supply problem, these tv's use a series of switching mode power supplies usually mounted in the same circuit board , the light flashing is an indicator that this is the problem, but these boards are expensive so you may want to get the tv looked at before anything else. You do not mention if the sound remains in your description of the symptom, but just in case it does then a back light inverter could be at fault. hope this helps. thanks for leaving you feed back.

Help! I have an RCA 40 inch HDTV (Model# D40W20). I've had it since 2005. Recently, the picture will flicker when I turn it on, but will stop flickering after a few minutes. My brother has the 52 inch model and his tv did the same thing before it broke down completely. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

The tv have a long board call a LCD inverter board.This long LCD inverter board is dead.That why,the tv have picture only flashes like a min. than,died and have sound left only.The LCD long inverter board help the LCD screen panel to have a backlight to produced a picture.Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a refurbish long LCD inverter board for the replacement.

took the TV apart and the powerboard has approx. 80 capacitors on it ,none were bulging and i was not going to check them all,this TV is a 2003 model so out to the trashpile it went and will use it for AR-15 target practice,got a new LG 48" flatscreen to take it's place,thanks for the info anyway though.
