Paper is not feeding in straight - it catches at top right of page as it enters. The paper crinkles from that point so the page comes out with off-centre vertical crease. There is a narrow uneven 'imprint' pattern (about 3-4mm wide) running along the same side of the page (vertically). When switched on, there is a crackly noise in time with the rollers turning. I am wondering whether there is something detached and stuck to the heated roller or one of the feed rollers. This occurred within a week of installing a new (proper HP) print cartridge. I removed a small loose piece of (slightly sticky) grey-black plasticised material about 3-4mm wide and 3cm long from the bottom of the paper feed tray. I don't know how to access the suspicious part - I can't feel anything within reach that is obviously loose when I take out the toner cartridge.
If it is a clicking sound it's most likely a gear that is bad. Haven't worked on this model, but typically it is one of the gears that works in tandem with the fuser that goes bad. These can be purchased on hp's site. Remove the fuser and inspect all the gears. There usually is a small plastic clip you have to remove to get at the gears. Inspect the teeth on the gears (they should be smooth) If it's not one of the fuser gears it could be one of the gears on the main gear assembly. This is considerably harder to access.

If you are good at mathematics, maybe you' ll see its better to buy a new, exactly the same printer. Take the price of four new cartridges and add the price of a new fuser. Now see if this price is lower than the price of a completely new printer with new cartridges and a new fuser (and all the other new parts). You' ll be suprised! (At least I was)

It crackled, not clicked. But I read other comments, and looked up the manual (thanks TechyDrood) and decided it was the fuser film come loose. I rang a local printer fixer who came to site and fixed on the spot for $50. Much easier than replacing printer :) and worth it because I had bought two new cartridges recently. Printer working perfectly now. THANKS.
yeah the fuser roller will break apart after a few hundred thousand pages and you will sometimes get small thin metal strips come out where the paper comes out
