Cleaning an LCD chip on a Sony TV

While changing the bulb on my LCD TV I noticed that behind the bulb (I assume the LCD chip) has dust or ? on the face. Can I clean that before reinstalling the bulb and if so how?

Use only a lens cloth and some dust is normal.

I noted the haze or ? on the optical Block when replacing the bulb. With a new Phillips bulb the TV now works great. From what I have read online I guess I will eventually have to replace the optical block. I understand their are remanufactured untis out there as this TV is out of warranty. Thanks to all who responded.

Yes, it's possible, but it's more art than science and there is a risk of making the problem worse. If they are only visible from very close, do you really want to take the risk. Also, if your TV is still under warranty, any home repair will most likely invalidate your warranty.

There are some good video guides to cleaning your LCD and repairing scratches on YouTube:

Personally, I use a large pure-bristle (not nylon!) paintbrush for removing heavy dust before cleaning as it doesn't drag potentially abrasive dust particles across the screen.

It's unlikely the scratched screen is covered by the TV warranty, but if it's really bad you might consider making a claim under your contents insurance - if you have accidental damage cover.

Hope this helps.

Sony KDS-50A2000 - bulb replaced but picture still yellow

Hi,It sounds like a light engine problem Sony is having.Basically the light of the lamp goes through tunnels that have mirrors that direct the lamp to 3 main LCD chips,These 3 LCD chips are blue, green, and red they blend to create the image and colors. When they start to fail you'll get color discoloration like what you are getting. You will need to replace the optical block because unfortunately they don't sell the LCD chips by themselves.GOD BLESS YOU!

I have pictures but its to dark

1. Do you smoke? (if so, this is why)
2. How old is the lamp? (over 2yrs, this is why)
3. dust, construction, stored in garage?( if yes, this is why)

DLP is basically LCD. LCD doesn't dim so this is not likely (but possible). Normally is is caused 1,2 or 3 above. After that you can try looking at the area where the lamp goes in. If you notice dust on the glass thing inside the TV (not on the lamp itself) you can try cleaning it off. USE DISTILLED WATER ONLY NOT CLEANERS. This mirror inside the TV behind the screen could be fairly dirty but honestly if this is dirty you have bigger problems so this is probably not a cause.

Blue ghost image on left side of screen

The Optical Block Assy would have to be replaced, same part that causes Blue Dots, not considered to be user replaceable.

Hello, inside the set there is an optical unit with 3LCD panels. Somehow the dust particles came into your set and now the dust is all over the optical unit and 3LCD panels. Only way to solve this issue is to clean the dust. Please contact your Sony dealer. Best regards, Arpi
