I have an eMachine T2240 with an Intel Celeron processor 2.20 GHz & 384 MB of RAM.  The only real complaint I have is that this machine runs slow - it is rather aged - and I tend to bump up against my memory limits periodically.  I want to boost my speed and increase my memory on this machine.  Any suggestions on what kind of processor and memory upgrade parts I should consider?

To speed up your processor, you need to take some load off of it. Search through all your TSR programs and services to remove things you do not need or want.
Another way to help your processor is to add more RAM to your motherboard. Find out what is the maximum you can put on the motherboard and load it up.
You can also reduce the size of your swap file. That would reduce the amount of time your processor is downloading data from your hard drive. A real processor time waster.

Unfortunately, these are old processors and I don't see any available new. Newegg.com lists a couple available as refurbished. You may be better off getting a new computer with either a Intel I3 or current AMD processor.

nothing much you can do about that, the limitation is down to the processor/motherboard configuration. I have an old packard bell with the same 'problem'.
just max out the ram and run something like ubuntu linux on it - better and faster than windows (in my opinion) and it's free.
If you really want to run windows then nothing newer than win 2000/ME will run in that memory.

I assume you are under Windows XP but this will also work under Windows 7 32 bit .
You can insert a 100GB HDD without any problem . A higher capacity is risky with your type of machine and could lead to a fatal read error , meaning you couldn't boot your unit anymore .
Under a 32 bit XP system , 2GB ram is the max.
I don't recommend changing the processor with the motherboard , you could encounter conflictual issues with the rest of the unit .
Buy yourself a new pc equiped with a I5 or better with a I7 processor running under W 7 64-bit is the solution but they still are expensive .

I know that Visual Studio 2008 runs fairly slowly on a 2.4GHz laptop with 1GB RAM, so I can't imagine that it would run all that well on a 1.6GHz machine.

you cannot change the speed of your processor unless your processor supports overclocking. however your processor does not support that.

if your computer is running slow try upgrading the RAM to 1GB.
also check to see whether you have unwanted applications running in the background

*********** board will support a max of 1GB of RAM. Your processor is an Intel at 1.8 GHz. The preceding is only true if your PC is the Emachines T1840 as you chose in the category listing of your post. Again if that is true, you can achieve the max RAM by installing a 512MB stick in each of the two memory slots.

PS: Gdlkn84as528 is correct in assuming that a less than 1.3GHz Intel processor would be a P3 or equivalent processor. So which is it, it can't be both ways?

Slow computer can also cause by alot of software install on your system that is using the resources of your computer like the Memory and Processor, so first thing you can do is to remove some unneeded software that you have on your computer and then after that try also running a scan on yuour computer with a good anti virus and anti malware because can also slow your computer down...

you can as high graphics card as you want as long as the is a PCI card.
