My answer is definitely the catmint route. If you have time, patience and space, try growing catmint from seed and take four or five fresh leaves to rub on things/areas you want your cat to scratch.
Ordinarily you can huy dry catmint which you can also rub on catpost. But, rub it on one side only, and in a smaller area, lower on catpost, then rub all around the post higher up.
You have to be a little sneaky with cats because they can be quite fussy.
You may try rubbing it with catnip. Or, dangle a toy mouse from a string at the top, making your cat reach up on the post with her claws; she just might dig in out of frustration!!
Cats can betrained to use their scratching posts, so that they don't take it out on yourfurniture instead. If you need some tips, watch this YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HFmfinRCJA
I use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum any hairs or dust. Then, I spritz the post with a mixture of vinegar and water, which gets rid of any funny smells. Hope this helps.
