If you backed up your messages to iTunes, you can retrieve them from iTunes. Just connect your iPad to the computer, and then sync the lastest data.
If you have no backup, you also can recover the deleted files on iPad, just recover messages in your iPad. And there is a step-by-step tutorial may help you recover.
Good luck to you.

If the messages exist in the backup, then they can definitely be recovered. Now there are 3 things you can do retrieve deleted text messages from iPhone:-
1 - Go to Apple Genius bar and see if they can help
2 - Restore from the backup:- This will get you all the messages you want, but will wipe out everything that came into your phone since the backup date
3 - Get a backup recovery software:- I have used iPhone SMS recovery software and would definitely recommend it. There are other options though, like the one Daiya has suggested, but they are just too expensive. It does the exact same thing for much less.

We take data security of our users seriously and have developed a rigorous data recovery/management process to ensure the safety of both your device and data. The FoneDog - iOS Data Recovery program contains three functions and each of them is designed with data security taken into consideration.
Feature 1. iOS Data Recovery
The main function allows you to recover lost data from your iPhone/iPad, iTunes backups, and iCloud backups.
Recover messages from iOS device: after connecting iPhone/iPad to computer via lightning cable, the program needs your permission before it is able to scan data storage space on your device so that everything is under your control.
Recover messages from iTunes backup: the program can also extract data from your iTunes backups. But all your data in the backups will be stored on your computer only and no one can access the data from elsewhere. If your notes or iTunes backup is encrypted on iOS device, you'll be asked to enter password to access the data but the program won't remember your password.
Recover messages from iCloud backup: the program can also download iCloud backups from your iCloud account so that you can view and extract data from the backups. You'll be asked to enter your Apple ID and password but again, the program won't remember the account and all your downloaded iCloud backups are stored on your PC only.

OK! In your case, there are always two ways for you to get back your deleted messages: restoring your messages objectively back from your iTunes backups and getting back your needed messages back directly from this iPad.
So, immediately check your iTunes backups!
But, if you have no such an iTunes backup, you can directly try the second ways.
You can straightly use a deleted data recovery freeware that always can deeply scan your iPad and restore all your needed data back:

How can I adjust the settings on my iPad mini so I can enable the chat system.

There is no 'chat system' apart from Text Messaging which you need a cellular service.

The iMessage system only works to another iDevice user.

Download WhatsApp for free. It is by far and away the best. You also get free VOIP phone calls and video messaging like Skype. It will automatically scan your Contacts if you let it and list those that already have WhatsApp.

Lost all contacts on iPad mini

If the important contacts in iPad get deleted, you will try to get them back. Restoring iPad with the iTunes backup is the easiest way to recover deleted contacts on iPad mini. If you update your iPhone backups regularly, then you can recover most of the important data from the backup. The restoring process is also easy to be done, and the following tutorial is for the new users of iOS devices:
  1. Connect iPad mini to computer with USB cable, and iTunes will launch automatically. If not, you should manually start iTunes.
  2. iTunes will recognize iPhone and display the iPad icon at the upper left corner. Click the iPad icon.
  3. The control panel of iPhone appears after you click the iPad icon. Click Summary in the panel.
  4. Click Restore Backup in the right part of the window. Then iTunes will allow you to choose the iPad backup, and finish the restore.

First manually delete all imessages and messages on your phone. This wil not get back all the space but it ensures you have no messages and the success rate is much higher.

I need to delete message app from my Ipad

You don't. Why don't you just move the app to another screen out of the way? Messages doesn't take much space, and iOS needs it.

You can turn off iMessages in Settings / Messages. Flip the switch to OFF.

Delete messages on iPad air

General > Spotlight Search >
then un-click iMessage
so that way it won't ever show up again.

1. If you only don't want deleted messages to show up in a search then turn off Messages in Spotlight Search.

2. If you want the messages physically removed, a quick Google search found that syncing with iTunes removes deleted messages (I haven't tried this).

3. Don't forget messages are backed up in iTunes so that also needs to be considered.

4. iCloud backups ???

5. The person you're messaging with may have copies

Cannot send iChat messages

Peggy,

There are a few things we can try:

First, make sure iMessage is enabled by going to Settings, then Messages. The toggle should be set to "On". If it is "Off", when you switch it on it should ask you to sign in with your AppleID.

Also, make sure the contact of the person(s) you are trying to use iMessage with includes the email address they are sending iMessages from. It will not work with phone numbers.

I hope this helps!
