Canon 450D viewfinder out of focus due to loose element within viewfinder, is this repairable

Camera functions normally in auto mode but not able to focus in manual mode due to viewfinder being out of focus, if camera tilted back viewfinder now comes into focus

  • Anonymous Jul 29, 2012

None of the suggestions will help, if you view through the view finder whilst holding the camera and aiming upwards at about 45 degrees view finder is clear, as you bring the camera down to normal postion you can hear a sound of the optic element moving (almost like it has come free from it mounting) and then the viewfinder becomes blurred. Have scoured the net looking for any info on the viewfinder assembly but either i am looking in the wrong place or it is one of life's greatest secrets. I just need advice if this is a service repairable item or should i just bin the camera and start again?

In that case it's most likely that the mirror is loose. Remove the lens. While looking into the opening in the front of the camera, aim the camera upward and then rotate it level. Does the mirror move? If so, it's loose. A good camera shop should be able to repair it.

There's a diopter adjustment knob above and right of the viewfinder. Turn the knob while peering through the viewfinder until it comes into focus.

Testimonial: "Not the mirror that is loose but an internal optic part of viewfinder, have taken into a company to ship camera back to Canon U.K for repair. many thanks for advice."

SOURCE: Digital Canon Rebel DS6041 - Auto focus does not working

allow to dry for an extended period. leave lens off, put in dust free area.
it may 'come back' after a few days of being open.
moisture can cause malfunctions. is sensor clean a liquid? or air?
air can be driven by a propellant which can cause problems.
try removing battery if it does not come back, or maybe before.
good luck, otherwise, time for service'

SOURCE: Canon digital camera will not focus

Check your diopter adjustment. It should be a small wheel on the upper right of the viewfinder. It is designed so that people who normally wear eyeglasses can use the viewfinder without their glasses, but it can occasionally get bumped. If the diopter adjustment is way off, it is like looking through someone else's eyeglasses!

SOURCE: My Canon EOS 1000D wont take photos, viewfinder flashes busy

Maybe you drop your battery and they have electronic components inside that could be spoiled, if is that the case, try to change the battery, it appeares to me that the ammount of current the battery is sending to the component is very low even thoe it seems to be fully charged that's why the camera is unable to display anything and the "busy" warning is blinking all the time, I hope you find this usefull.

Could be dirty contacts. Remove the lens and clean the contacts on the body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

My Canon EOS 450D shows busy while trying to click on AF auto mode and it does not click at all.

There are several contributing factors to this problem and I'll try to list a few that may be the cause.
All Canon EOS camera auto focus modes us contrast to focus this means simply that no contrast there is no focus. There is a small green dot in the lower right corner of the viewfinder that will come on and stay on solid when auto focus as been achieved. By default the shutter will not operate "click" if auto focus has not been made.

Here are a few examples of where auto focus will ether search (focus back and forth) or fail completely.

A solid painted wall, glass between the camera and subject, mirror, chrome, any large body of water, clear sky. Another place you wouldn't expect is clear skin in your subjects face or body.

Cameras with multiple focus points and set to other then the middle will have a problem if the photographer is still attempting to use the center focus point.

Look for the green dot in the lower right corner of the viewfinder that's your focus confirmation.

My 18-55mm lens on my canon 450D sometimes does not function or does not auto focus. I have to move the focus with my fingers before it i will function again.

Try cleaning the contacts on the camera body and lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Canon Digital Rebel XT auto focus

Auto Focus does not determine exposure. Only sharpness. "Wrong" exposure could be due to the metering mode being set in Spot Metering. Set it back to Evaluative Metering which may improve the overall even exposure of your shots. Test your shots in full auto or P mode. M (Manual) mode will require you to check the exposure setting manually (you can see the indicator in the viewfinder when you half-press the trigger)

The LCD does not come on when camera is turned on. How do I fix this.

The EOS 350D does not have a Live View function like the compact point and shoot cameras (Panasonic Lumix, Powershot, IXUS etc). You need to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot. The LCD only displays menu settings and images you have already captured (Play Button). Later models of EOS D-SLRs come with Live View but still doesn't have auto focus and you have to focus manually (eg EOS 450D, EOS 40D, etc)

Can't take pictures

The focus element within your lens may not be moving normally. This can be due to contamination such as sand, impact, or failure of the motor itself. If the lens cannot resolve proper focus the auto focus system on the chip will not continue to take the picture. Another possible reason is that the button has simply failed. Focus modes

There are four focus modes: S-AF (Single auto focus), C-AF (Continuous auto focus), MF (Manual Focus), and S-AF/MF (Simultaneous mode). (SINGLE Auto Focus): Focusing is performed once when the shutter button is pressed halfway. C-AF (CONTINUOUS Auto Focus): The camera repeats focusing while the shutter button is pressed halfway. (MANUAL FOCUS): The function allows you to manually focus on any subject while looking through the viewfinder. SIMULTANEOUS USE of S-AF mode and MF mode: You can fine-adjust focus manually by turning the focus ring after AF is performed in the S-AF mode.
