Most burning smells in refrigerators comes from the compressor overheating due to the overload relay going out . Unplug the fridge before the compressor burns out and take the model number to appliance store for a new relay. The relay is located in the back of the fridge inside the lower back panel.

Burning smell

If it smells like burning a burning plastic/ceramic then your brakes are locking up and burning. Next time it does it, see if the smell is coming from the rear tire. if so, its time for a brake job

Remove the power plug and move your fridge forward. Now look at the rear bottom side of the fridge to see if there are any parts that heats up. You can trace this to the smell emitting from the heated part and confirm. It can be the motor, contactor or the defrost timer.

replace capactors on mains power board they will have raised tops and look like little batteries with white kine on one side replace with same value e.g (2000.mf 25v) make sure line is on same side take picture to help

WHIRLPOOL SIDE BY SIDE

CHECK THE OVERLOAD/RELAY ON THE COMPRESSOR. THE RELAY COMPONET IS BREAKING DOWN AND CARBONIZING CAUSING A BURNING SMELL. THE PART WILL SOON STOP WORKING AND THE COMPRSOOR WILL NOT RUN. IT WOULD BE WISE TO REPLACE THAT PART ASAP.
