If you have the same problem with another input such as a DVD player, this TV might need attention by a qualified service technician.

SOURCE: 42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.

One of the SUS panels will be defect. On these panels you will find several fuses, the panel with the broken fuse must be replaced.

SOURCE: LG 50PX4DR 50 in. Plasma TV/DVR Combo popping

Hi,

Hi,

The pop sound was due to any component failure.
Most probably the capacitor. Depending upon the size the sound is produced.
The first step of diagnosis is checking the fuse. The boards of the plasma tv are very costly and in most of the case non-repairable. The only way out would be replacing the ones required. If you want to repair it yourself then you should be having proper knowledge about the internal circuitry of the plasma TVs as they are totally different from tubes and lcds.
You should also require a multimeter and soldering equipments.

It is not possible to say which board because the diagnosis has to be done step by step.
You will have to check the PSU output and Y board and Z board input.
Most probably you will need to replace Y,Z and Ctrl board unless there is virtual defect.

Let me know,if you wanted to repair it yourself. I would be glad to help you further.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

SOURCE: I have a lg model

I will put this out there and I have this same issue on a daily basis. The popping sound is a capacitor that has gone bad, the second pop is a capacitor that shorted out becuse of the first one that went bad.
The boards that are responsible for this are the X and Y sustainer boards, they are what creat the picture on the screen and this is why you have sound but no picture. This is a very very common issue with plazma tv's. You must replace both of these boards together or the bad one will short out the good one!
Yo can google these parts and will find a host of people selling them, so look around and get the best deal. Don't get used or rebuilt, get new with a warranty. They are very easy to swap out, they are the two boards, one on each side of the display.
If you need more help with this let me know, tere are instructions available but it really is an easy job, just make sure the set is unplugged for at least an hour before touching anyhing inside.
